Hello, I am new to this site and enjoy it very much. Thought I'd see if there is someone out there that might be able to help me? I have a Continental F162 gas engine that drives an old crawler. Engine is missing the distributor. The parts manual calls for an Auto-lite distributor No. IAD 6004 1C. I have run accross two replacements that look to be identical, however, part nombers are a bit different. One is IAD 6004 1B and the other ends in 1E. The only difference being the last digit in the part number. I am hoping someone might know if either of these would work in my engine.
Thanks for reading.

Cannonball, Thanks for the tip. I've already been in contact with Weldmart. The Sales manager told me Pertronics doesn't make an electrinic distributor that fits the Continental F-162 engines, only for the F-163's. As a side note: He was very interested in obtaining the Welder/Generator once I had removed the F162 engine from it. I emailed him photos and he wants to do some trading.

My old Autolite book showed the 1C to fit Continental-Federal Machine, 1B just said Continental, & 1E Massey Ferguson. Parts list showed housing base shaft and most parts the same. Only difference in them is the weight springs and cam stop plate assembly. So probably just something different in advance specs but book doesn't say how much. IAD-6004-1C is old engineering number and subs to 44-99 Prestolite sales number. What kind of crawler is it for anyway?

Glen and others, Thanks for the help. This is exactly the info I was looking for.
Here's my story: Crawler is a Terratrac GT-30 made by ATC (American Tractor Company). Case bought them out in the 50's. Previous owner replaced the original (blown) F-140 (140 CID) Continental engine with a Y-69 (69 CID) Continental engine that he removed from a bailer. Tractor is a bit underpowered, so I'm going to install an F-162 (162 CID) from a Lincoln Welder I purchased. Would have liked to install an F-140 but those engines are more difficult to find. The F-162 and F-140 Continentals have the same block, hence, fit won't be a problem. The F-162 has a bad magneto and I would like to replace it with a distributor and coil. ATC used both F-140 and F-162 Continental engines in their dozers. Both engines used the same distributor (IAD 6004 1C).
Thanks again for all the help, Nelson

Nelson, The other distributors will probably work maybe better? You may want more advance than the dist. for welder had. Any Pertronix dealer will have the electronic ignition kits for it and they can get the new Pertronix distributors for the Continentals in welders also. The dist. was changed up some on later Lincoln welders to a different number also IBT-4705. I have mags too but you will probably spend more or as much on a mag as the electronic ignition would cost. Some of those older Continentals also used a inverted upside down mount mag to clear the carburetor and those cost even more to fix and some parts aren't available. A new surplus military mag is available for them though. Good luck with it. Glen

The letters IAD mean ignition- anti- dust and usually have a middle plastic or bakelite cover under the rotor over the contact points.

I can look them up for you to see if I can find what differences if any? Like the others said if they fit and rotate the same and look close probably will work. There were lots of F162s made for welders, forklifts and many applications. New electronic distributors are available for them from Pertronix... www.pertronix.com

If they fit-same gear and length etc. I would try it. Check first to see if they rotate the same direction.
Other variation might be diferent advance.

Don't know if this will help you or not. If you can find a place that works on forklifts and they have an older man in the back keeping them running he should be able to tell you. Hyster used a lot of those type engine in them.
