Our township (western Wisconsin) charges $60/hr with a minimum of $15/driveway. Figured as a break-even cost. Likely to go up real soon.

The plowing is done by the sanding truck after all the roads are plowed, no special runs for driveways - they get plowed as the sanding is done on intersections. A couple of winters ago we were snowed in for a week because there was a second storm before they got the first one cleared. Normally it is two-three days after a storm before the driveway gets plowed. If you have to get out sooner than that, plow it yourself or park at the end of the drive and walk to your car.

The homes on the island I live on are fairly close together. The plow guys just go house to house and offer to plow, going rate was $1 per minute last year.
Maybe more now because of fuel prices.

the other problem is when they want it done at 3 oclock in the morning before they go to work and 3 in the afternoon before they get home (assuming its snowing all day) they you possibly have logistics problems if your ont he other side of town etc. another problem i have run into people dont like you plowing at 3am (the neighbors i should say.) and the last huge problem in residental subdivisions is what to do with the snow????? ? illeagle to put it in the street. alot of people dont want it pushed into their lawn, brown in spring for some time possibility of tearing up lawn. sometimes it depends on how big of a pain in the _ _ _ it is is waht i charge. also some pople will want sidewalks etc done, it try to find jr high or early highschool kids willing to do it to pick up a few bucks. not many willing to get up at 3am in the dead of winter though

Yeah, but will people pay that?. $40 is quite the price for a small drive. I love making money, so I'll see what the market will stand. Your sure right on the price of fuel, I would have to charge big prices just to cover expenses.

I think that if you have to travel a distance to do just one drive then $40 is justified, but if you can contract several drives in the same area then you would want to back off a bit, maybe $10 per drive, $15 - $20 if it is bigger and longer.

$10 per drive is way too cheap, I wouldn't even get out of bed for that. I'm thinking $35 wouldn't be outrageous. It used to be $20 way back quite a few years ago. For $10, I couldn't even cover fuel expenses and truck repair. Vehicle inspection just jumped to $35, along with everything else.

$20 just to drop the blade and one pass. Same with the tractor 20 bucks just to take it off the trailer. Distance traveled, time it takes, size of the drive, width.

That sounds more like it. How do you decide how much to charge someone who has a larger drivway?.

Pedometer- charge by the foot. Course, if he wears it on his belt, he'll reset it on the way- if you do the walking, you have to walk back. So tie a flag to your tractor tire, do the math per revolution....but while you're watching that and counting- you just ran over his mailbox, dog, and petunia patch, which you will pay for. I guess I'd go with a standard show-up charge for a short drive, and eyeball estimate for the medium and long ones, per pass. Depends too if you are in the business to make money, or do favors. I've always done about 10 drives after a storm- 9 free ones for neighbors and a landlord, and one that I charged.....he took us farmers for a million one in a planned bankruptcy and hasn't worked in 11 years- so it's not free. Last few years my snowblower has had a bad gearbox..... so sorry.

Thats what I was figguring I'd do is eyeball it and give a estimate of X nuber of $$, but I wanted to hear how others do it, weither they broke out the tape measure when they did the estimate or what they did. Definatly looking to make money.

Up here in Canada where we actually have snow to plow, when my neighbour asks I go and I go for nothing, becauae there are getting to be fewer of us and we need each other. BTW when I go I don't go with an A IHC with a glorified sxoop shovel on it. I go with an 8100 FWA JD with 12 ft blade. When they come back to repay the favor they try to outdo me, and I like that system.

Exactly- if you can't do it for friends and neighbors, you won't have either one. They'll be there when you need something. Previous generation/neighbors were there when we started, now it's payback time, and they'll do it for the next ones.
