Ok, The trouble is that I work out of the pickup. Home repair and whatever the public asks for. My truck now is a 1988 chevy 3500 with the 454-4speed. 7---9 MPG!!! 183.000 miles Somthing has to change. I do carry weight now and then, those retaining wall block do add up. A toyota does not seem much better than the dodge with the hemi. Wanting at least a 3/4 ton but the gas prices are killing me.

Get a 3/4 GMC with small block and your milage will be similar to the diesel. The 5.3 is rated at 20 mpg highway.A diesel is a waste of money if you do not haul or carry heavy loads. With the money you save you could get a trailer and tow 4 tons of block no problem.

If that truck is in good shape stick with it, you would spend more to trade than you would ever save in fuel costs

I agree with everybody so far- diesel is the way to go. There are a lot of decent pre-Power Stroke Fords around, but they had problems with the glow plug system sensors. There are 3 of them, and its difficult (and expensive) to diagnose just which one is turning on your glowplugs at 70 MPH on the freeway, and instantly frying yet another set. There's an easy fix- run 2 - 10 guage wires from the relay terminals on the top of the right fender to a heavy push button switch you mount under the dash, and disconnect the sensors. Push the button to heat the glowplugs- you'll soon figure out how many seconds, depending on outside temperature. Also, always plug in the block heater if its going to be under 40 degrees. End of problem.

A diesel cost more, but then again the resale value is more also. The price of gas is about the same as diesel in most places now give or take a couple pennies. Given that without all the complicated calculations of actual cost comparision and figur'n that diesel gets better fuel milage and can haul heavier loads, then I'd say "BUY A DIESEL" Just, in my opinion I would'nt buy a new one, because you could find a good use one much cheaper. But if your just looking for a good old truck to haul your tractor from time to time say a couple times a year and dont drive your truck often then you could buy one with a big block gas motor that would do the job easily, but if its a daily driver I would buy diesel.

Are you waiting for someone to tell you to get a diesel? I will, get a diesel. I bought a 96 Ford F250 with the Powerstroke diesel, and I love it. To bad it isn"t a manual trans., but that"s my preferance. Around my parts, diesel fuel is about the same price as gas. My F250 is getting about 16-17 mpg, much better than if it had a gasser in it. Jerry; I have a 03 Silverado, 3/4 with heavy tow package, diesel with allison trany. 40,000 miles on it. I tow a large fifth wheel camper about 2 thousand a year. I tow a reciever hitch trailer with tractor's, implements or whatever at least 2 thousand a year (will replace with fifth wh.). I have a fifth wheel (converted from gooseneck) dumpbox trailer I use about 8 or 9 hundred a year. The farm/hayfield is 32 miles from the house. My average milage to date is 16.4 by the onboard computer which is always right on when I check it. Get up to 24 at 60 no load and down to 12.8 with a big load including my camper. If you can find a clean used diesel go for it.

My 99 Ford F-350 turbo is slow off the line but that diesel motor sure levels out the hills on the road. 16.8 average and 22 on the road. Diesels are a love or hate situation but the advantage is usually a heaver truck with much better brakes and much better fuel usage than gassers of the same size.
