So now you have the alternative diagnoses, find out! Check spark quality, or existence, when engine dies - no spark = ignition problem.
Drain carburettor and watch fuel flow - must be full flow for at least a minute aftercarb is MT. Reduced or failing flow = fuel problem.
You could also try starting engine with choke or starting fluid for more info, check voltages at coil to see if it is ignition switch.
Hope this helps. Regards, RAB

Beginner, When you say runs for a little while you need to be more specific on the time frame since different run times give a different diagnosis from electrical to fuel. If you have a time we might be able to pin point your problem. Hope this helps.

the tractor will run for about 25-40 minutes. with either bushhog or disc then dies. after sitting ile for 10-20 minutes will start and run and then follow the same pattern. thanks for your help.

Could be a bad coil. Had one do me that way on a Farmall C. Dad blasted coil anyway.

I think it may be the distributor. The old front mount dist has a tar like substance in it used as an insulator that can heat up and melt. When you shut it down and let it cool the insulator hardens and should operate properly again. Check your temp gauge when it's running and see what it says. Just my thoughts.

Could be either one. Bad coil or dirty fuel lines. Had a Farmall 300 die in me every so often. Got to giving it the old stare down and it said its coil was bad. Replaced coil. no problems after that.
