I looking to build a log splitter of my Ford 800. I want to use the 3 point hitch and the tractor hydraulics.

Any help with plans or how to best use the hydraulics would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Joe

I agree whole heartedly with the folks who warn against using a tractor (especially with internal hydralics) for a log splitter. Whay use a high tourque 40 odd HP motor to do the job of a 5 hp motor.

One more piece of advice thought, look for a horizontal splitter with the wedge on the piston vs on the end (front) of the machine. You will save oodles of time and effort not having to pick up every piece of wood the needs a second split.

I was going to buy one. the guy would sell it for less than $400. Split logs to 36". Then found out how slow it would be and the cost of running it off the tractor. Majority of the Hyd out there won't put out enough GPM. Looking back, I should of bought it. Converted it with a 5hp engine I have sitting up in the garage, etc. Oh Well. Craig

Hi Joe Mike is right. I used one on my ford 4000 and it used 10 gal of gas to about 2 gal for about 6 cord. Also the pump is only around 4 gal a minute and seemed to slow for me. I went to a 5hp splitter and don't regret it. But if thats what you want its fine with me. Have a good day!!

Joe, just my .02 - I don't know the hp of your Ford, but a 5 hp briggs with a 2 stage pump will probably out split it and use less gas doing so. I almost did a 3 pt years back, but I couldn't see running my 574 [52 hp] almost wide open to split wood. No 2 stage pump on a tractor. Those new splitters for under 1000.00 will tilt vertical or lay flat. I've read some good reports on the ones from TSC.

Northern Tool makes a 3 point that is reasonable in cost. I have made a few log splitters in the 70's and 80's. I found that you can buy one for the same price the individual parts cost, and the steel. I used their splitter on a MF 253, used quick disconnects to hook her in to the tractor hydraulics. The splitter has it's own valve. Don't get the auto stop valve, (auto detent????) if you are using quick disconnects, cuz the pressure to bypass the detent in the valve can blow the connectors apart.

Long time, short memory. However we put a home made 3pth splitter on the 800 Ford. We hooked the hydraulics into the remote and I think tied the control lever with a bungee cord. The fellows operating the splitter said it was slow. But it had more power then with the other tractor they were using.
