Anyone else notice that most posts here are OFF TOPIC and definately not about tractors in any regards? Not that I am against general chat, but maybe this board just needs to be renamed or something...

Kim - maybe you could add another discussion board to the mix(?)

Anyone have anything to talk about involving tractors here???

Dan

You think THIS is bad - you aught to see me strike up an antique tractor post on the Rush Limbaugh message boards! Oh those posts about our inefficient carburetors and no emission controls really get them going :-)

As far as OT, I thing Kim should come up with a political posting. Things get ugly around election time. Don't ask. Some of my postings about the people on the left and their believes vanished all of a sudden. Craig

Shouldn't the first words of your title have been "Off Topic"? How many answers did it generate? Now, in my ignorance and curiosity, I had to waste a few precious minutes reading the whole thread. Oh woe is me. When will this misery end? :)

OT threads do not bother me much. The warm atmosphere of this board seems to attract many and hence I usually get very valuable replies to a "tractor question". Without you all lurking here the forum would not offer much.
(Example: My question about removing a stuck Woodruff key, two weeks ago. I highly appreciate the responses I got.)
My 2 Euro cents. Hendrik, from the Netherlands.

A few other forums and bbs have tryed to eliminate the OT and coffee shop posts and have since become ghost towns. Some of the questions folks have may be of a timely manner. The more people you have checking up on the forum often, the more likely the question will get answered in time. I understand what you're asking, but really, I think the members here do a good job of labeling the threads as OT, so if you see that just dont click on it to read it. Now if no-one labelled the thread as OT, then I'd say you have a very good point.

I'm new to this board, about 6 months and I would just like to say I enjoy it very much. Yes sometimes it does go O/T, and if I'm not interested I move on down till something grabs my attention but I for one wouldn't leave the board or change it and people new to the board understand and like it. Besides if you think about it, any time you have at least two tractor lovers talking tractors ( BS-ing ) it will sooner or later go O\T. Just one tractor lover's opinion.

I think since this board has been running under this current format ( how many years ? ) the 3 top categories Tractor Talk, Tool Talk and Implement Alley, seem to be where many things are discussed, some boards have the brand name you are looking for, O/T, others don't and it really makes no difference, as this being an internet community in a manner of speaking, people will bring up all kinds of subjects to discuss no matter what label is on the can. I've seen posts like yours many times throughout the years, trying to narrow down a particular category and it never really seems necessary, 99% of the participants on these boards are extremely polite, highly considerate and usually within the subject matter, when they are not, you do see the O/T in the subject line most times, acknowleging that the person who started the thread is aware of that, and is letting you know. It is simple to not read something of no interest, and no matter what way a particular category is influenced by it's label, you can never please everyone, so leaving it open really eliminates the problem, forget the label, it's a formality. This is similar to prohibiting non-members on some boards which has been discussed many times and it always seems that by doing so it would isolate many people who have great things to offer, registering is fine, some boards do it, but nothing like leaving the door open and hanging up the welcome sign ! Hey this is mainstream agricultural America, weekend warrior farmer, part time equipment user, urban tractor restorer, common tinkerer, ( me LOL )country living, midweek escape for some, junk collector, salvage person, tractor jockey, Joe Dirt ( auto trader !- great movie )..... + how many other kinds of people ( no offense re: above descriptions ) getting together to enjoy what I've always thought was an excellent discussion board for anyone even remotely interested in the broad subjects covered here. It's not a bad point but I honestly think that sometimes one can open one of these categories on any given day, scroll down, see a whole bunch of posts, none of much interest, but then come back another time and will spend an evening reading. Did you ever notice that say when your internet service was down or the PC offline or you are just too damn busy to be able to sit and participate, when you do come back, there is an abundance of good reading ? Not sure what else to say, some people will make your point just in an attempt to start trouble or create a large conflict, but I'm sure that is not the case here, I've seen a few that were almost comical, makes you wonder how often they get out of the house ! LOL ! Actually, it makes no difference to me, in my humble opinion, it's just nice to know there are boards like these around, a lot of good is done by them, and a lot of people have become good friends because of it.

The only disappointing thing in it all:

Folks generally only look at the 1st page when browsing through here.

Let's say you ask a question about fixing a tractor, & you really need help.

Twenty minutes later come 3 O/T messages, about some fabled Tri tractor, about someone's horse trailer, & about the welfare state of New Orleans.

And, in an hour, your question is pushed off to the 2nd page. Everyone too busy reading & replying to those O/T messages. You never get a reply.

As a tractor person, do you come back here? Do you go somewhere else looking for answers? Do you come back here to help others with tractor questions - when you don't see any to answer through all the O/T stuff?

The policy around here changed about a year ago, until then not much O/T was alloowed. That's cool. But, there is less & less tractor talk, and more & more O/T stuff. It's cool if that's what you want. But the content of the site changes. Be aware of that.... Years ago, there was a lot of good tractor info. Kinda gonna go full tilt one way or the other. There is very little middle ground in the world. :)

Dan I realize you don't mean any harm. If you can not see the effects of the topics here on this nation, then choose your favorite tractor and go to that board instead of this one. If you don't like beer or Fords don't buy it just as an example. There's alot of topics come up I wish didn't and I been wrong on some things in the past, but these people are forgiving and tolerate my strong opinion anyway even though they know I won't change my point of view. They might even be just as strong as me , but I know where they stand even when I disagree. Got to respect honesty. As for the storm topic below it affects more than just the farmers, you will see. As far tractors sitting outside the only thing I can do is tarp them. They are not movable and I don't think they will float away, we never had more than 6 inches in the yard when Allision dumped 25 inches on us, so that's ok. I'm just worried about trees falling on them.

I do frequent the 9N/2N/8N board quite a bit, but like to keep up with all Antique Tractor talk. As I have said MANY times on this post, I am not advocating eliminating ANY of the discussion that goes on at this great website - only to make the message board title more appropriate to the content. I too like to read friendly banter and get a laugh or see others concerns at different issues, that was not my point. I was thinking about creating a message board that was for nothing but non-specific general discussions.

And as far as weatherproofing the tractor - I was thinking you should somehow seal up the exhaust pipe up so water could not enter here and rust the cylinders - causing much more of a nightmare during clean up.A tarp would help keep the water from entering from around the shifter and such. Not much you could do about flying objects in hurricane class winds though.

Thanks for the follow up,
Dan

I guess when our country is in a crisis, its hard to concentrate on anything else. My bad. To keep it on topic, if things don't go so well, jfp, txgrn, Logan and others may lose their tractors. If they go really bad it could be their houses and then some.

Good luck gents.

I wasn't speaking specifically about yours, or anyone elses post here. I appologize if it came off like that. I was making a suggestion that we may need to get another message board specifically for off topis subjects as it is very misleading to new site visitors seeing "Tractor Talk" on top of this board with very little talk about tractors. Of course we are all concerned with what is going on with the world - but there will ALWAYS be "something" going on in the world.

Maybe on this subject we could discuss "How to weatherproof your tractors" or something.

I know you didn't single me out, I was just using myself as an example. And one more thing , the exhaust ain't on the tractor, but its covered good. Due to a rebuild. They would be but, there's a 70 Chevelle in the shop that belongs to the little woman and I ain't going to fight over it as she's just to good to me. So they sit outside.

I enjoy the "coffee shop" atmosphere of this board.

No one is stopping the posting of tractor issues, and the lack of a great number of them makes it very evident that a lot of people have more important concerns than tractors on their minds right now.

It certainly is not like there are so many tractor posts that the site is clogged by the "OT" posts!

If ALL the OT posts were eliminated, the board would be "dead", and move along so slowly it would be boring.

Would you rather see the board completely dead, than kept moving along by the OT posts between the occasional tractor post?

Methinks if you are not a politician, you should be, so you could dictate to people what THEY want!

"If ALL the OT posts were eliminated, the board would be "dead", and move along so slowly it would be boring."
To Prove your point go to any of the yanmar tractor sites not much going on there. It's like watching grass grow, waiting for another post, only need to check in once a month.
Lets Keep this one as is, of coarse with a little editing from Kim.

"Methinks if you are not a politician, you should be, so you could dictate to people what THEY want!"

Bob - got a sore spot for politicians do you? :) If you re-read my posts at no point did I try to "dictate" what anybody wants except myself. Hek I actually made sure to say I wasn't being specific to any one person. I made no personal attacks to any individual that warrants yours against me. I made a simple suggestion that we should possibly create another message board for general "coffee shop" discussions instead of confusing new visitors with a message board title that has a minority of posts regarding that title. Heck - I would think that would be pretty intuitively obvious.

But - if you want to send your phone bill payment to the electric company as well - far be it from me to "dictate" to you that you probably shouldn't...

And no - I am not upset about this dialog, to each his own.

Mike3501----

The most outdoor problem with the Farmalls is getting water down the exhaust pipe, that can be prevented by putting a large #9 can over it....maybe punch a hole in the side and tie the can down.....next water gets into the tranny, past the bolt heads in the large top plate.....I know a guy that removed the seat and placed a cut to fit 1/2" rubber pad on top of the tranny plate and replaced the seat....

Build a lean-too on back of your house.....

Use a tarp - tie it down good.
Won"t solve the hail problem in CO, but will keep most of the "elements" off of her...
I"d look to build something to put her in - that hail you get out there is relentless!!! (Like you don"t already know that!!!!)
