Massey Ferguson Burning Oil

Hello Everyone,
I recently purchased a 1973 Massey Ferguson 165 with a Perkins gas four cylinder engine. The guy I purchased it from said that it needed a head job and it burned a little oil. I took it to the shop and stated that it burned oil and may need head work. The shop reworked the head. The shop now says I need rings. I think differently the smoke only comes from the exhaust and not the road draft tube. The only time it smokes is at low power and speed. At high power no smoke. I drove it down th road at 2000 rpm for an hour (no smoke) and then shut it down in the drive. When I re-started the tractor five minutes later tons of smoke from the exhaust. This tells me that the valve guides are bad. Does anyone have and explaination why this smokes only at low power.

when you fix head and some what raise compression this will cause oil to get sucked by old worn rings saw it many times this is a simple and cheap motor to major who knows you may get by with rings and bearings .

Sounds to me like oil is sucking aroud valves. They make seal for valves. Some good and some bad. Some mechanics can install them properly and some can't.

If it is the guides, you need to find another shop - unless you instructed them in a prescriptive way that prevented them fixing it properly - as all the work they have done already will have to be re-done. You could do a compression test (dry and wet) to determine the state of the rings and/or a compressed air test on the cylinders to see where any leakage is taking place.
The reason for more smoke at low power is because the throttle plate is causing a higher vacuum at part throttle, than at full wide open, drawing more oil down the guides, if that is the problem. You could remove your manifolds to see if oil is on the valve heads, if they are accessible. Deposits on the plugs may also indicate whether problem is indeed inlet side (vacuum related), or exhaust side and whether it is all cylinders or just one.

The shop said the compression is good. The dyno test showed the horsepower right where it should be. What a waste - I asked them to replace basically everything in the head. He replied why replace it if it isn"t bad? Well I guess this would be the reason. I still need to find out for sure.

Can't tell you why it smokes but I can tell you if you do the valves/head and also nee to do the rings. Reason is this if you fix the top you will end up with the bottom blowing out sooner or later.
