I'm looking for a slow tractor for transplanting. A new one with a true creeper would be nice but I can't justify the cost. I saw an International Hydro70 advertised. 2800 hours. How good were these transmissions? What problems do they have? Are their speeds really infinitely adjustable from 0 to top speed or is there slippage etc? This tractor might work for me. The only thing I don't like right now is that it is gas not diesel. I drove a hydro once and it seemed to make a lot of noise, is this normal?
Thanks
Phil

For transplanting their is nothing - I really mean nothing better. I'd take a hydro over a gear any day for transplanting. It will outperform even the newest gear drive tractors for transplanting. Hydros are do really have infinate speeds - you can even set onions with them if you want.

Gas or Diesel dosen't matter as transplanting requires very little drawbar power and if you idle it down will burn very little fuel. You'll come to appreciate the infinate speed capability and superior 3 point lift capacity.

I will caution you that Although I like the Hydros (my dad had an 826 Hydro) they are not great tillage tractors. Hydros generally have 25% - 30% less drawbar HP than the same tractor in the gear drive version. Add on a Gas engine and it will put you in the poor house pulling a disc, plow, etc..

If you get it at a good price I'd grab it. Hydros are generally less desirable than gear because of the their HP loss and the gas engine. So you should be in for a good supprise on the price side unless their is another farmer like yourself or a colectior looking for that specific tractor.

Good Luck

How is 7-8000 for the price? Sounds good to me if all else is good.

Nothing wrong with the Hydro's. My first was a 656 and I had a lot more after that. I even put a turbo on my 186 Hydro and turned it up to 160 HP. No problems with any of them . Have even plowed with them and got along great!

I have a 544 hydro and as far as extra noise all there is is the regular niose a hyd motor makes. Thats all the drive is is a big hyd motor. Mine maintains its set speed as long as I keep the throttle constant. I love it for ease of use.

You ain't gonna wanna buy gas for a Hydro. They will go very slow but when you hit a hard spot it may stop. Might be ok for ocasional use if the operator don't mind keeping the speed adjusted.
