I am working on a IH Model 14949J (200) that will not go forward unless you put the left brake on and then it will move. When you let off of the brake it stops. I took the back cover off and looked in at the gears. Is there a small straight cut gear on the differential that could be broken? Anyone heard of this before? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would bet you have a broken axle on the left side. Have a Super C that the exact same thing happend. Broke that bad boy up in next to the trans housing. Don't know how it happens but jack up the left rear of the tractor (make sure its in gear) and try and spin the the left rear. If it does with no gear sounds, thats your problem. BobG in VA

Sounds like a broken axle to me. The 200 is basically the same as the C and Super C, and I have been through this movie about four times with mine. Once it was stripped splines in the bull gear, but the others were all broken axle shafts, right between the bull gear and the inner axle bearing. If you jack up the left side and turn the wheel with the transmission in gear, you might be able to hear it grinding against the broken stub. If you remove the PTO assembly you can see whether or not the bull gear turns when the axle does. Unfortunately the PTO opening in the case is not really big enough to work through, so you will have to remove the deck to replace the axle.

Yep, definetly in the differential or left final drive.
