Tractor hesitating...

MM Jetstar 3 has been working well until this weekend.

It seems to be starving for fuel. I checked the fuel line to the carb and it flows fine.

Here are the symptoms.

I let the tractor sit for a few minutes and it starts fine then after a few minutes it stops as if running out of gas.

It starts fine.

Is it possible that something with the carb is sticking? Float?

I"m fairly new at this engine repair stuff so I"m grasping here.

I"m thinking of cleaning the carb. What"s the best way to do that?

What other things do I need to check?

Thanks.

Patrick

I guess it's not really hesitating. It stops.
And when I said it starts, it doesn't have problems starting, just problems in keeping it running.

Should I try a carb cleaner?

Thanks again.

Patrick

It might be in your carb, but first I would make sure the vent in the gas cap isn't plugged. When the tractor stops, remove the gas cap, listen for a sucking sound. The next item to check is the sediment bowl under the gas tank, it might just need a good cleaning. The third item to check will be where the gas line goes into the carb, remove the line from the carb, and then remove the fitting from the carb., there should be a very fine mesh screen attached to the fitting, and this screen could be plugged. The screen can be cleaned with an aerosol carb cleaner. If none of these items are the culprit then it is time to rebuild the carb.

I had an MF 165 that was doing exactly what you are describing.
Tried a number of things to fix it;
cleaned sediment bowl, rebuilt carb...
It would start and run fine for a couple minutes then act as if it was out of gas.
Wait a few minutes, it would run fine again, then shut down...and so forth.
Turns out the fuel line after the sediment bowl (or out of the tank, can't remember) was plugged up with crap...so gas was flowing, just very slowly, and so it would burn through the gas it had accumulated in the line and then "run out of gas"...
so anyway, we just disconnected the lines and connections and flushed them clean.
runs great now...but when it was happening i thought that either a) the tractor hated me or b) I was crazy because whenever someone else would see what the problem was the tractor would run great for them (for the couple minutes they were looking at it)

I will check the fuel line. I did check the sediment bowl already and even cleaned the carburator.

Thanks.
