Today I received a call requesting me to leave retirement and return to work as marine engineer on a heavy lift crane ship that I had previously served on.Our Navy owns 11 of this class of vessel, all of which are civilian manned and operated. These vessels were constructed to operate any place world wide ,as floating port facilities. In other words the ships can act as a means of taking place of shore side cranes that have been destroyed. The Ships are fitted with Six twin mounted 30 ton cranes on a whirlly which gives each set 60 ton cap. or can be married to lift 120 tons. The booms are 145 feet long and each weighs 96,000 pounds.Since the port of New Orleans port facilities have been destroyed the government has decided to utilize several crane ships to fill in the gap. N.O. Was a very busy port an without cranes loss of revenue is astounding.Lost time for a large ship waiting to load or discharge can cost $ 20,000 per day more or less ,hence the decision to employ crane ships.I have no idea how long this operation will last but I will be in a good position to get lots of photos of what is going on.I am only mentioning this in the event anyone here would be interested in seeing any of this operation because being landlocked does not allow one to see this sort of stuff.Sorry to have been so windy.I know this has zero to do with tractors but is just not every day stuff.I love my 16 tractors but also love ships. Thanks for listening. I think everybody here would love to see some pictures, if you get the time. I'd sure love to see these crane ships, but being a land-locked youngster, I have to stick with pictures, at least for a few more years.

Good luck, Chief.

HI Chief,

This is a wonderful thing that you are going to do. Just be careful as there is so much damage down there (I only have seen what is on the TV but have some relatives in Alabama and they say that it is devastastin). I would love to see some pictures so that I can show them to my children. I just want them to be very thankful for what they have and want them to have the desire to help people in need.

God will be with you,

Debbie

I, for sure would enjoy your pictures and comment. I am sure that your perspective is quite a lot more of interest to the folks on this discussion board, than the "agenda" of the networks. We have all seen the flooded houses, and the antics of ferrel people , but, to see the real workings of resurrecting the port will be fascinating. Thanks for offering!

Good luck and God Bless! I, too, would like to see photos.I've been out of the USMC since 87. Spent a lot of time on ship (SS Tarawa, Siapan, Iwo Jima, Bellowood, Nassau, Guadalcanal, Guam, to name a few) with Helicopters (CH-53 Heavy lift).
We were in Mexico City for eathquake relief - seeing pictures fro NO remind me of the carnage in Mexico (except we didn't have the water to deal with). Thanks for helping out!

Being a midwestern boy, I never knew such things existed. I sure would enjoy seeing photos of an operation like that. Pete

Clear skies and smooth seas for your crew and ship. Hope you can all do the job as safely as possible so you can return to farm and continue to enjoy it.

Hello Wayne; Thanks for the reply.I will try to post pictures from time to time if there is some interest. If not will get in touch with you and those interested like 37 Chief.I started to sea in 44 in Merchant Marine.Did time in the Navy during the Korean affair. Then went back to MM and stayed there almost continuously until 2002.I retired then after just about 40 years as Ch/Eng.I hobby farmed on my long vacations. As you can see I am an oldtimer.I took the first of the crane ships out after her completion in about 76 and stayed there for a few years. Then went on to other vessels. Was C/E on passenger cruise ships SS Independence and S/S Constitution in Hawaii from 81 until 88.Later went back to the crane ships and stayed until I retired in 02.I have had a really great time all my life, loved the ships and all their problems because there was a new adventure or problem nearly every day.Now I have an peach orchard and some long horn cattle. To tell the truth.I was delighted to be called back to work.It is about 0500 am and I will be leaving here soon.I may not get to see YT for the next week or so because my ship is in layup and I'll be busy round the clock for a while. Thanks for the replys from you and 37 Chief.I had not seen any other posts at 0400 this morning when I started this missile.Best regards ,Ol Chief

It would be an honor to have been good enough at your work to be remembered and called back in time of need. I (along with millions of others) have sent some money, but would love to be capable of doing something more. Thanks for your service, both past and future, and for being willing to go back to a difficult situation to help in time of need.

Let us know when you have pics to see. I'm guessing by your screen name you were a Chief of some type doing shipboard duty. Me I was a First Class Machinist Mate in the USN when I got out in '92. I spent 99% of my time below decks in the engine rooms but would have loved to have gotten outside more often and really been able to see more of what went on topside. No matter where I worked I always loved being aboard ship. If it weren't for things having gottet so political I probably would have stayed in. Now I work on cranes and other construction equipment for a living. What ya'll are gonna be doing sounds like a perfect marriage of ships and cranes, two things I really enjoy, so seeing the two working together would be a real treat. Post when you get back and have some pics, I for one would love to see them. Having worked onboard ships and now working on cranes I know both have their own dangers. So keep your head on a swivel, be careful, take care, and come back safe. Good luck, Wayne

Go do your part in restoring the shipping ports, and slip a picture or two in when you can. I like all my tractors also. stan

Good luck. May you always have fair winds and following seas.

I was an electricians mate on a cruiser many years ago.
