I have a friend at work that was born and raised in New Orleans, and who is quite anxious about some family still there. I was curious as to why they didn't leave. She said that they had experienced many storms over the years and usually the weather people oversold the storms. They had never had a catastrophic failure of the levees. And they had never had the pumps fail. I also asked why people went into thier attics. I thought that pretty weird. She told me that since it was a low area, minor flooding was common, people would put thier furniture up on blocks or on tables, go up into the attic, come down a couple hours later and clean up. They had never had water more that 6 in to a foot deep. The city had been ther for 300 years and never got a direct hit from such a storm. As for the weather predictions, I don't know how many times I have got ready for 12 - 16 in of snow, only to have 2 or less. Or to have 3 - 4 inches predicted and get 14! Something about if you want to make god laugh, tell him your plans??!!
Easy.
