The heat pump wins hands down as long as the temps are 35F and above. The Harman model 45 stoker takes either grain or wood pellets to allow more fuel choices. 45,000 btu max so that will carry main heating load of any residence. The 45 does not require a conventional chimmney,is thermostat controled and is self igniting.

I used pellets for years North of the Seattle Wa area and used about three tons a year in that climate. We live in N. Idaho and use 6 tons to heat a 2600 sq ft home. In Wa we had a stove that was marginal size for the house and it was adequate. The one here in Idaho (a furnace not a stove) is smaller than recommended for the 2400 sq. ft. house and when it gets down to minus 23 it seldom goes to low fire. I would recommend that you size the stove properly to the house if you put one in. There is maintenance work of cleaning the ash out which can be messy if you are not careful. With fuel cost rising I expect we will never see them at 105.oo a ton any more and may put in a wood furnace since I have access to an abundant supply of wood.

My brother has a pellet stove and also agrees it's expensive to run. The main heat source is a heat pump, and he thinks it is cheaper to use unless it gets very cold. Now after one year's use, the stove will only be used as backup on cold days.
