I looked at a "96 Ford F250 XLT with the 7.3L diesel. It has 151k mi., auto, 4wd, reg. cab, long box. Engine ran very good, and went down the road nicely too. With the price of fuel (diesel is same price as ethonal in Central Iowa), I decided my next truck would have a diesel. How many of you have experiences with the 7.3 Powerstroke? How much of a pain to repair/ work on? The engine compartment hasn"t been cleaned, I could see there was some oil build up on the engine, not much though. This has been a farm truck, one owner, doesn"t look abused. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Rich

I have on word for you Dodge. Or as I tell every one I have a 5.9 Cummins with a Dodge wrapped around it. I have a 94 2500 4X4 Dodge that gets around 21 or better driving the 8 miles to work every day. When you take it out on a road trip it gets 24 or better. When I pulling my 36' trailer we get around 15 miles per gallon.

Thanks for all the responses. I talked to a guy at work who has a 1992-93 F250 w/o the turbo. He has 260k mi. on his and couldn"t say anything bad about his either. I looked at the rear end last night, thought the tag said X.55 on the tag. Would that be a 3.55 sized rear end, only heard of a 3.73 and 4.10 gears.

I have no intention in putting chips or propane, or anything of the sort in/on the truck. The more I think about it, the more I"m hoping the bank doesn"t won"t upset me (not give me the loan). The salesman is tring to get a hold of the previous owner to find out if the trans. has been flushed and any other maintainence has been done.

Again, thanks for all the help, Rich

I bought essentially the same truck brand new spring of '96 except I got the 5-speed. If You don't abuse them, throw Chips & propane at them they'll last almost forever. I semi-retired Mine two months ago with 288,000 miles on it to drive a small gas economy car 120 miles/day to work. There's many of that vintage of truck with between half a million and a million miles on them. Mine could easily be one of them if I keep it enough longer.

Rich:

When you are looking at those trucks, make sure you stay in the 94-95 and newer.

You saw my truck when i came up to get those balers. Good truck, it is a 93 with a 5 speed and 4.10 gears. I was expecting to get in the 16- 17 mpg range with it. I am getting 14- 14.5 at best. When I went to get that truck, I pulled it home on a trailer (my 93 purchased with a bad clutch) with a 95 7.3PSD automatic and 4.10 gears. That truck averaged 17 mpg on a 320 mile round trip, 160 of those pulling the trailer and a 6500 F250. That is the big reason I recomend the PSD, it gets better mileage, and with diesel here in SW IA at 2.59 yesterday and headed north that 2-4 mpg difference is worth it.

Hi there Rob, how are those balers working for you? Did you get the manuals I mail to you? That was a nice looking truck you had there. Around Des Moines diesel is around $2.77/gal. I figure as long as I get the same as my F150 (16-17mpg), I"ll be happy. Rich

Mine must be broke in reply to Robhkent, 09-01-2005 06:48:27
I've got a 94 350 5 spd 4.10 PSD, just got 11 pulling a 3 horse trailer, gets 15 or so empty. Diesel milage, while better than gassers, is highly overrated. And if it wasn't for the diesel stop, I wouldn't know anything about how to fix the thing myself. Most of the people that post there know what they are talking about and accept the fact that doing too much to their engine will blow it up. Especially in the 94 to 97 forums. It's no different than any other forum. There are people here that I respect and some that I'd just as soon see go away.

Sooner or later, someone is going to tell you to go to the "experts" at thedieselstop.com.
Be forwarned that that website is the biggest source of idiocy and misinformation out there.
The vast majority of those posting are either high school kids dreaming of "their" ultimate Ford Powerstroke, wannabee truck drivers, or those who have modified their truck, or never maintained it, had something break, then b@@ch and moan because Ford Motor Company will not honor the warranty when it comes to repairing the damage done by their own stupidity. The sponsers and moderators are always shilling their "performance" modifications, or implying that adding a 250 HP chip will neither damage anything or void the warranty.
Any forum that has over 2 pages of people responding on how to check the tire pressure is obviously populated by those with less intelligence than a cockroach.

Thanks for the heads up. I don"t plan on "supping up" the truck, the power it has now is more than I"m used to. I"m more concerned about making sure the truck will be around for a while, than looking like a bad a$$.

I am on my 4th PowerStroke, having had a 97, 99, 02, and now an 05, and I have NEVER had ANY problem with any of them. There were a couple of recalls, one on the fuel tank mounting bracket, and the other on the air filter box, but as long as you keep the oil changed, the air filter clean, it is well deserving of carrying on the Ford Quality tradition.

I live in NW Iowa. We have had a couple differnt ford 7.3's. We had a 1995, Same options as what yours appears to be. It had about 290.XXX Before it took a major fall. They are very little work. They are so nice to work on as well. The best part about them is they Last forever. It sounds like a pretty good truck!
