Rust neutralizers..

I used a "rust neutralizer" on a rusted part. I sanded first, removing all the loose rust, basically leaving the "hard" rust, more of a "rust stain". The neutralizer turned the rust black, and everything seemed to be working as advertised. I decided to resand the part, and, as I sanded, more "rust dust" showed up. My question (finally) is this: does the neutralizer form a sealcoat that stops new rust? Or, does it simply change the very surface, and allow rust to reappear after paint? Sorry for the long post, but I figger somebody out there has used this stuff, and could report good/bad results. Thanks....Stan

I have used a product called Rust Converter which does the same thing as you are talking about. I used it all over an old Dodge M-37 I bought for use on the farm and on an old F-350 which spent its life in a peach orchard exposed to the corrosive chemicals used there. Both were extremely rusty and had lots of scale. I wasn't too concerned with a showroom finish, so I used a wire brush sander to get the heavy scale off and then a orbital sander to smooth it down. I applied the Rust Converter as sparingly as I could without getting too many brush marks and very lightly sanded it when it dried. The finish wasn't too bad, actually good for what I started with, but not showroom at all. Rust prevention was my main motivation though. They both have held up well for a couple of years with no rust popping back thru where they were treated. I also primed with Rustoleum rusty metal primer before I painted.

On the following website, there is a good article on restoration using electrolysis and the acid you are talking about which is "Phosphoric Acid".
On the home page click on "Restoration tips".HTH..Keith

Some of the old timers that used to give such good advice on this net are not active here anymore. I do remeber one that turned the metal black, then you painted over it. I dont remember the name but did a google search on rust inhibitor and got some good sites. Check them out. Hope you find something good. Let us know.

The best thing out there to prevent rust is Fluid Film. It will also stop rust on contact from spreading further. John Deere carries it.
