Had a Carpenter Bee nesting in a piece of 2x4 railing on my front porch. Today I noticed that the Carpenter bee and it's larvae had been "evicted" so to speak. The bee's larvae were all laying around the entrance to the nest, some fresh sawdust, and the new tenant, a HUGE yellow/black striped wasp of some sort. As far as I can tell he moved in last night or today. The ol' bee is nowhere to be found. The new wasp seemed to be by himself.
I took care of him a few minutes ago, he was huge.
Kinda scary doing battle with a wasp the size of a small rodent.

Oh noooo. You didn't really do that did you? Oh nooo. My neighbor is so gonna kill me for that. He went on vacation and asked me to take care of his wife's imported Mongolian Canary that matches that description exactly. Says he paid $6K for it and another $2K to train it. I was cleaning the cage, and last I saw was flying towards your house. Eats bees. It's dark and it aint back yet. You didn't really do that did you? Cause they're gonna be back in the morning. Oh Oh, spaghetti-o's for me. You still got it's parts? Maybe I can glue them back together and glue him to his pirch and act like it got so excited to see them come home that it died of excitement? You still got all the pieces? Otherwise, I'm in big trouble. Big trouble. I'm coming over with glue.

Mark

My neighbor had some Cicada Wasps under a building... He got on-line, & did some research, & said they are not very aggressive, & sting is painful, but no worse than most other stinging insects...

Sounds like you just killed a cicada killer. Looks like a yellow jacket on steroids. About two or three times the size of a bald faced hornet. They usually place a host insect in the hole with one of their eggs on it to feed the larva.

A wasp the size of a rodent? Do you live near a nuclear power plant? ;-)

Nah! Maybe I'm just trying to justify why I was so nervous going in to get that beast!
He was pretty big though!

I've seen hornets do this. (Bald Faced Hornets - the ones who build the conical shaped nests you always see in cartoons) They flat take over the hole - not sure why since they are really social types who live in colonies.
