Have a 1984 Massey 230 3-cyl diesel. Has a two-piece fuel filter. Have problems getting the air out when I change the filter. Does anyone have suggestions how to keep this problem from happenning.

If your diesel fuel gravity-feeds to the filters, make sure the fuel level in the tank is well above the top of the filters. That way the fuel will force out the air when you bleed the system through the filter bleed screws.

Also helps to put a little air pressure in the tank- I drilled a hole in the center of an unvented gas cap the right size to accept a rubber based tubeless valve stem- don't put a lot of air pressure in but a little will get things moving. This was an improvement on my earlier method, which was to put my mouth inside the fill neck, and blow- worked fine so long as I held the pressure, but blew back when I let go, and I ended up with a face full of diesel. Sort of the long chain hydrocarbon equivalent of egg on my face.

Can't say for sure but on most of the diesels I have worked on we could fill the filter with fuel before you put it on. There should also be a plug you can pull out of the filter holder and bleed to air form the filter. I can't say for sure on the tractor you have but most are set up that way.
