well finished chopping the last of the sweet corn. chopped averaged 3.2 tons per acre thats it. now mind you we normally average 8.4 tons per acre corn itself. waht are you guys averageing? only picked 1 field 40 acres 2 semi's not even full. i was talking to dad told him things can be worse. i said it will start raining about the 2nd week of september, rain every other day till december in which time we will be able to pick the corn only after the ground freezes and then youll have 35 lb test at 35 percent moisture and then propane will be 2 dollars plus. he said something about taking his dirt nap. i think i should become an auctioneer as all the farm sales that will be coming this year. not sure if anyone will have any money to buy anything though. maybe some corporate guys. went to the parts store jd. and just blowing some smoke the 6620's getting wore out and talking about a new machine without all the options and the gadgets (green star) no heads etc 189,000. at 1.80 bushel per acre corn tahts alot. and talking to guys at work non farmers have no clue. we dont have insurance besides hail (we're wishing for a hail storm best thing that could happen to us) but there talking about well we should have had insurance well we dont and even if we did they still only pay based on the county average. if we had a bad year so did the county so even that aint a savure. i dont know. they say were improving but i dont see how. was alot better in the old days. progress? i dont see it

Sounds like youre having a tough year. Not too great here in KS but we will have a crop. I do want to correct your thinking on crop insurance though (and no I dont sell it) Federal crop insurance is based on historical averages. Yes if you are a first time buyer your gaurantee is based on county HISTORICAL averages. Other wise you use your yield history. Im not sure of how many years it takes to get on your own yields. Im a relativly new farmer, this is only my 5th crop year. I would not or could not be without insurance. I collected 18X my premium in 2002 had a small claim in 2003, and even had a replant claim this year that will cover my premium. Im not trying to brag about my poor performance over the last few year. LOL Im not aware of a bank who will lend money on a crop (which many young farms such as myself need) that is not insured. I have an uncle who tells me that good farmers dont need insurance. BS, easy for him to say from his engineering career in Chicago. Maybe he was on to something though, I have a good college degree so if not for those claims in my first few year, maybe Id be workin with him actually making some money LOL
