What is wrong with my Allis WD?

My Allis Chalmers WD which has run fine for fifty years now has a problem. It starts ok but when I run it at high rpm (or high enough to use) it starts to backfire and then quit after about 30 seconds. It will idle all day. So far I have rebuilt the carburator, changed the plugs, points, condenser, and rotor. The coil checks OK. The gas is new. What am I missing?

I found it! Thanks!!!! in reply to Mark Boyer, 08-29-2005 06:04:58
I took off the sediment bowl holder, that is I unscrewed it from the gas tank and found a gob of dirt in the pipe between the gas tank and glass bowl. Partial fuel restriction was the problem. Thanks to all who responded. Mark

Are the valves floating because of weak or broken springs?

If you havent had the floatbowl off in many years, maybe you should take it off, pull the Main jet and clean out the passage that leads to it..

Unscrew the plug on the bottom of the carb bowl. You should get a nice, steady stream. Try this for 30 to 60 seconds to make sure the bowl is empty and that you are seeing the fuel as delivered to the carb. Backfiring is an indication of a lean mixture.

Recheck your ignition work, I had one that would short out at the points and kill the engine at higher RPM, it would idle all day but quit without warning at higher RPMs. The gas suggestion is also a good possibility.

Possibly a plugged up or partially plugged up vent in the gas cap, or something in the gas tank which is restricting the flow of fuel.
