I have a Farmall 666 diesel which starts/runs just great-the problem is the pto. I only use the pto to run a 6' bush hog-I hog about 100 acres a year of mainly grass (CRP land) but also some small trees which are less than an inch in diameter. About 8 years ago, the pto began to slip so I had it rebuilt. About 4 years after that, it was slipping again so I had it rebuilt again at a second shop who said that the first "rebuilder" had used some parts which were pretty well worn out. Here I am another 4 years later and the pto is slipping again! Some discrepancies-1) I have not used HYTran but instead tractor hydraulic oil 2) PTO speed under load is about 1800, not the 2000 rpm that it should be. Any ideas? It's about $600 to rebuild the unit! What am I doing wrong?

When you get the pto back in you have to hook up a gauge and set the hydraulic pressure per the manual. Sounds like your rebuliders might not know what they are doing. I have a 686 same as 666, that I do a lot of heavy pto work with and have'nt had a problem with for several thousand hours.

I agree,

A PTO failure is just about a "once in a tractor lifetime" occurance on these red jobbies of that size.

I'd recommend taking it to an IH guy to be repaired.

did they use vasealine, the clutchpack for a 666 was less than 75 bucks at the locale dealer last summer, im thinking the 1066 clutches were like 60 bucks, sounds to me like your repair shop was taking a vacation on you, it dont take 15 minites to take it out, 45 minites to rebuild, 30 minites to put it back in ,

My neighbor was having the same problem with his 666 and PTO job not lasting. A friend of his offerred to look at it for him. The rebuild kit from Case / IH had 9 discs in it. His friend said there was too much slack in the final drive shaft with just the 9 discs so off they went to the dealer. The parts guy finally pulled a picture up and low and behold there should be 12 discs for the rebuild - not just the 9 that were in the kit!!! Hope this helps...
