hi guys!

a good mate of mine is having a little problem with his 1988 Nissan Micra. it is 998cc - for a start!

here is what he posted on another website.

Hi, I have a 1988 Nissan Micra that uses too much fuel. It is returning about 33mpg at present. In my owners manual it states that for urban driving it should return around 45mpg and at constant speed driving at 75mph around 55mpg. The engine seems to be running fine. I have fitted a new air filter, had an oil change and a new oil filter and replaced the plugs. I do not believe the distributor is dirty or the timing is off because as I say, it runs fine. Was wondering if any of you out there could help me as it is costing me a lot to run at the moment. Thanks

Any ideas? just age?

Thanks

Ben

I would do the routine maintanance things like change air filter, oil change, plugs, wires, dist. cap, check tire pressures.
I would do that because if it did not fix anything I would feel that I did not lose anything being it has to be done sooner or later anyhow. Plugs start going bad after they are put in. Sometimes very hard to see a weak one with an eyeball. I like the idea that another person suggested about the O-2 sensor. From what I hear, they go bad slowly also and show no definite signs of it.

Don't really know but a few things that you could check;

1. Fuel filter and or injectors--if there is a problem there the computer could try to compensate by running too rich.

2. Cat converter plugged or too much back pressure in exhaust?

3. Brakes dragging?

4. Improper or dirty fuel?

5. Airflow restricted somehow?

Check these things and report back. Good luck.

Don't forget the O2 sensor. They don't last forever. As they go bad it may signal for more or less fuel. Both of which will reduce milage.

Tire inflation and/or tread pattern. Some tires roll harder than others.

How many miles on this beast?

Does this car have a fuel sensor? If so, have you had it checked?
