3020 occasionally quits

My 1969 3020 diesel will occasionally quit on me. It acts like it runs out of fuel. I pump the little lever on the fuel booster pump and sometimes it will start right back up, sometimes it won't (I don't know if that is helping by pumping or not). There will be a bubble in the glass bowl on the pump also (like it is not getting fuel. I took the fuel line off from tank and it seems to flow freely. It also idles rough when it is running. It seems to run fine when I wrap it up but just idles rough. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Being a 69 year model does it by chance have the short "C" injector pump? they run rough at an idle . I don't think many if any parts are still avaliable---just changed a 4020 over to the DB pump and new lines

The transfer pump may have a pin hole in the diaphragm.

Does your 3020 happen to be one that is killed by turning off key? If so your problem could be the tiny switch in pump that controls fuel or it could be lack of power to pump. Tx Jim

One possiblity is the elastic damper ring failing in the injection pump's governor.

The once clear plastic gets hard, black, and brittle, and breaks up. When a piece plugs the housing pressure control valve ahead of the return fitting on the pump cover, the engine will stall. If the flake of crud falls away from the fitting, the engine will again start and run until the fitting gets plugged again.

A $25.00 OH kit for the injection pump solves the problem, unfortunately, a trip through the diesel shop will add about $400.00 to $600.00 to that, in labor, and miscellaneous parts.

If you are mechanically inclined, and get service information, it's possible to replace the ring yourself, or perhaps there's a local mechanical familiar with the procedure.

If you take Bob's suggestion about taking on the job yourself, also replace the transfer pump liner, blades and springs. They are a wear item and almost always need replaced when the govenor seal breaks up.Also look carefully at the bushing in the boottom of the pump.Lots of times it will need replaced as well.Use epoxy glue to set it place and hold the height to specs. The last seal kit I bought cost about $85.
