I grew up in a housing allotment in the suburbs but always had a desire to be "out" somewhere. As a kid, we were always miles away in the big wilderness behind the Ohio-Erie canal riding mini bikes and camping. My dream came true 3 years ago when we purchased 6 acres, 1/2 woods, 1/2 fields. We built a log cabin wayyy off the road. I have a tractor, brush hog, blade, scoop and a couple other goodies for it. We're going to plant a big garden next year annd perhaps have a couple beef cows and some chickens. Last night after dusk was nice and clear and I was walking my field up to the road just thinking how lucky I am to be able to live in the place I do. It's not so far out in the country but sure feels like it.

Good for you. Bought some land myself which incompasses one side of a lake in northern Wis. Coyote, turkey, wolf, bear, fish, etc, sure is quiet there, can sleep all night. Too bad the assessor came through last month. Assessment came today in the mail, went up 300%. Would have liked to leave it to the kids. Wi Craig

Hey Craig, what happened there? Did or are you selling it? Sure hope it don't come to that. I'd hate to hear it.

Heard on radio news today: That town in Connecticut the the US Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of, saying could use Eminent Domain to sieze the land owners land and reappropriate it to business' so local governments could make more tax revenue? The town they ruled in favor of is now going after the land owners for back rent for the time the case was being appealed through the court system. The back rents range anywhere from the tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, which means that the amounts given to the land owners won't be paid at all, and the government will get the land for free, and even get money in some cases for stealing the land in the first place. Talk about rubbing salt in the wounds. And, the case came back up for review to the Supreme Court, where they could've revisted the case and their decision, but they refused. Salt in the wounds twice.

Mark

Hey Mark. As a past assessor for Wis Dept of Revenue, I was told this law was for the taking of land for use as highways, schools, etc. Not for malls, condos and such. Shame shame. Craig

I agree with you Craig, 100%. As I understood the intent of eminant domain, was for infastructures and the sort, schools, highwyas, etc. Bolstering a tax base for over spending was not one. I agree with you, 100%.

Hope you get to keep that land, use it in good health, and leave it for the generations to come. That to me is what it's partly about.

Take care, Mark

Congratulations. One only lives once, and may as well enjoy it as best possible. Take good care of it, and yourself.

Yep, same here. Moved to the country directlt from the 'hood. (Literally) My mom inherited the family farmstead which has been in the family for 100+ years now. I spent some time out there fixing up the place about 15 yrs ago and caught the fever. It's getting a little yuppified out here right now but hopefully we'll train 'em right as they move out here. I can't stop them but the way the zoning is it won't be too bad. Told my wife I ain't ever moving again, matter of fact I don't even want to go to the funeral home just roll me down to the bottom of the hill behind the house.

cj3b_jeep It doesn't take long to "get adjusted" does it?
I grew up in the country - didn't take much city living for me to figure out that "in town" was not my gig!!
If anyone says, "I don't understand why anybody would want to live out like that - there's nothing there". Just tell them - "it's what it ain't got that makes it good!!"

Did not take me long to adjust at all. The funny thing is we're only 10 minutes from 2 different wal-marts (I don't shop there anymore though) 2 home depots, 2 lowes and 2 dunkin' donuts. I've gotten so bad about wanting to be home that it's all I can think of when I'm anywhere else. I can sit on my front porch, walk my fields, hike the woods without ever seeing a soul. Behind us, through the woods, is a large farm field, across the road is a 30 acre field of hay. The yuppies are 2-3 miles up the road. I always laugh and smile to myself when I drive by those places. I drive a 15 year old pickup with 200,000 miles, they drive BMW suvs. The have puny John Deere lawn tractors (those who mow their own lawns) I have a 42 hp, 5,000 lb. farm tractor. I hunt coons and groundhogs and spot deer all the time. I just love it.
