Okay. On our new farm, there is a belarus 820 tractor. We sort of had a little fight over how it's pronounced. I think it's "Bull-lare-us" and my parents think it's "Bell-are-oose"

so how do you pronounce it?

Guess my parents are right... :-)
"Beller-oose" it is!

As far as I can say, our 820 is not "Junk". It recieved a lot of abuse by the previous owners. It hasn't had a oil change in years, leaks hydralic oil like a sieve, PTO does not work, and the gears sound like a dentist's nightmare.

But it runs like a clock!

Besides, it's the only tractor that has a front-end loader, (Or actually runs) and we still need it for moving on there... :)

Belarus is one of the "states" in Russia, and "there" they pronounce "BELLA ROOSE".

You're right on with the pronunciation, as far as I know. Bella-roose. Although, as far as I know, Belarus is a country all by itself these days. It used to be a Soviet state, back in the day.
Correct pronunciation aside, here in Nova Scotia, most people I know always pronunced it Be-lair-us;
some of us a little bit sarcastically..... . but I know it's not correct. Have a good one.

Rod

The country or province or whatever was Bel-are-ROOSE. (with the emPHASsis on the last SylLABle. Of course this old country boy called them bel-LARR-is for years and no one cared.

Forgive me if I go off on a tangent. I was reading an article in the (British ) Farmers weekly recently . It showed how farming has progressed in Russia. It showed a picture of what can only be described as a flock of tractors( They were Case actually not Belarus ) with enormous sets of discs behind them all in a line waiting to go into a field. Apparently they are buying a lot of tackle from North America these days. The price of feed wheat in UK is about £60 a ton and rent might be around £100 an acre. In Russia the price of feed wheat is £60 a ton and land rent is £8 an acre. Who is laughing now?

what few have them around here say "that %^&%%$$%%$$####$%$%^%$^%^& piece of junk"!!!! local long dealer got a small one (30 or so hp) on a trade. had a little over 200 hrs. ask me what i would go to get it. told him i fiqured about $1500 - - - then told him that i would have to have cash that i would not take a check from him and the tractor. told him i was afraid he would stop payment and i would be stuck with the tractor!! LOL - THIS responce in no way is intended to insult the 3-4 people that own one and like it!!

Now, you have gone and done it. I am one of the 3 or 4 people that own a Belarus (570) and actually like it.
I will try to forgive you but it will be difficult for Bella as she is kinda sensitive.

We pronounce it "j u n k". Resale value around here is $ 40 per ton. But if you have one and it works for you, good for you.

Belarus Is a actual province or state in the USSR or former USSR and your parents are right on the way it's pronounced.
I think it was somewhere close to where the Nuke plant blew up.

Now I knew it had been a Soviet state but I would disagree with the pronunication.
AFAIK Russian pronunciation is alot like Finnish in which case it would be Bel ar us (us like is use).
