Belly or PTO mower?

I have about 3 acres that I mow with a rough cut mower but I don't care for the appearance when finished. I can find a cub with a belly mower in the range of $2,000 to $3,000 or I can purchase a 3 PT. finishing mower for my JD 950 in the area of about $1,700. The first option (though more expensive) allows me to have another tractor so I don't have to change mowers between rough cut & grass areas but I am concerned that a 10 HP Cub may not be capable of cutting damp grass 6" to 8" tall. Has anyone any recommendations?

I'll have to disagree with old. I have a Woods RD7200 3-point finish mower and the finished grass looks better than when I mow it with my John Deere riding mower.

The 950's about 27HP. I have one with a small JD hog, but don't use it much. Use it mostly for the loader and augering fence posts. It's size makes it maneuverable in tight places. Can get either a JD belly or a 3 point finish JD mower for it. I see 850's at the prisons using bellies, and my neighbor picked up a very similar mower, except is 3 point for the back of his Jubilee. I'm thinking is at least $1,500 from the Deere guy, since Ingersols and Woods were going for about $1,400 a piece a couple of years ago.

But, if you wanna buy that Cub with a finish belly, I'm sure it'll more than handle 3 acres at such a short heighth. I've got a AC B with a 59" Woods that I use around the house and have used on a few hilly acres that I sometimes let get 2'. 1st does great, 2nd does well, and tried 3rd for a short distance up hill once just to see - bogged down and looked like a hay field, but did it. That Cub aint gonna have no problem with what you're askin. Wife go into the tool shed? Could hide it in there.

What are you crazy? I you can find a reason to convince the Misses that you need a 2nd tractor with out her cussing you out then jump at the chance. Hey and if the cub don't cut the grass good enough then now you have a reason to go buy the 3pt finish mower attachment anyway. Just my 2cents.

I would vote for a Super A, 100, or 130 with a belly mower.

If you are going around a lot of trees, buildings and other things then the belly mower is much better. But if you have good open straight cutting then the 3 point is a good choice. I bought a 6 foot Land Pride finish mower last year to go behind my Super C and it works great. The Land Pride is really a well made mower. But working around trees and buildings is difficult.

You allready have the JD 950 and that is a very good tractor. That cub is underpowered. It sounds like you have a brush hog on the 950 now ? I'd look into a landpride rear mount finish mower. If you want to change implements on that 3pt. faster get a quick hitch too.

For the same money, you could find a Farmall A with a belly mower. A good bit more power than a cub.

The belly mower will do a better looking job, and even if the cub is a little low on HP they handle a 5 foot mower better then a MTD 20HP riding lawn mower. The 3 point type mower will work also but the cut will not be a good looking
