Freeing up a stuck valve ????

On an overhead valve engine, can a stuck exhaust valve (was stuck open but we were able to move it a bit so it is now moveable but still unuseable as is) be worked on from the top end without removing the cylinder head? The valve is out in the open and we have free access to it, the rocker arm has been removed and so is the springs, collar and retainers. Can turn it with soft-jawed vice grips, it is more moveable (somewhat tight) in the closed position than when open (very tight). Any hints or suggestions from anyone that might save us a lot of time and money?

just keep working it up and down. use penetrating oil and it will free up. I use a tire iron to pry up, a brass hammer to tap down.

I have used brake cleaner as a solvent to free sticky valves that are sticking from gum and varnish on them. Just flood it on, wait a few minutes and turn the engine over. Keep doing this until it frees up. May want to check your pushrods after you get it free. Sticky valves sometime cause bent push rods. My neighbor swore that a pint of automatic transmission fluid in a full tank of gas prevented them from sticking. I couldn'rt swear that it worked but he did.

I had a old timer show me a trick. I've done it on several different kinds of tractors & trucks. Put a electric drill on the valve. There's usually a place it turns easy , start there and slowly work it up & down. I've even seen him take a screwdriver & reach in the plug hole & wipe some valve grinding compound on the valve to lap it in. Just keep oiling the stem while your working it

With the exhaust valve closed put air pressure in the combustion chamber through the spark plug hole. This will make it easier for the valve to raise back up and close as you work to free it with the lubricant.

The valve stem could be bent.Is there a chance the piston hit it?I woud try using some braake fluid on it.

I had a Wisconsin engine on a Hobart welder that had a stuck valve that I sprayed wd-40 on it and let the cam push it open again....done this a few times and then fired her up...still missing....took out plug and done the above again with no help...till I started thinking...the wd-40 was being burned with combustion! Put lubricating oil on it and it leveled right out. I had taken the head off and twisted two head bolts off that I had to drill out before using the oil. In your case, I"d say work some thin oil in it and don"t get in a hurry.....just try to work it back and forth. Also, tap it sideways as you"re doing this and use some common sense when you do it and use a brass drift. If it doesn"t co-operate, I would rather take off the exhaust manifold and work it from there...it"ll be right in alignment with one exhaust port. Fred OH

I have freed up a lot of them, but I left the springs on them when I did. I just do things like fill the exhaust with tranny fluid, the cyclinder with tranny fluid and just work the valve till it moves. Also if it only has one that does that running it on the other cylinders help since it get things hot and that makes things move when it will not other wise. But I wouldn't do that with out the spring on it other wise it might come loose and drop in to the cylinder and brake the piston.
