IH-Farmall Cub Timing Question

I"ve been working on a "48 cub and got it running, but the timing mark just won"t go where it"s supposed to be. It"s about 1 inch from the mark with the distributor adjusted all the way over. Engine has no power and farts through the carb under strain. Is it even possible that this thing jumped time or is there another adjustment I"m missing (the rotor gear is new and lined up correctly)? With a direct drive cam, I"m thinking jumped time means I"ve got some gears to replace? Are the gears part of the cam/crank or can I get them separately?

Here's a link to the factory service manuals, graciously provided by the cub collectors:

The #^&%$ link doesn't work, if you open the "thread", using the "expand" feature.

Here's the link:

Thanks I got it to work. Still wondering if it's possible/probably for a cub to jump time.

The only way a cub can jump time is if someone removes the gears and reinstalls them incorrectly. If it has a distributor you can remove the distributor from the drive and turn the shaft a tooth or two and reinstall it to get it correct. If it"s a magneto you are going to have to pull the front cover. An idler gear runs off the crank and turns the governor gear, which drives the magneto. there are timing marks on these that have to be lined up for a mag to work. Ptobably someone in the past has had it apart and not gotten the gears timed correctly.

Thanks for the info. I think I understand what you mean - never thought to look there.
