Replacement starter

I just put a "new" starter on my '43 Farmall M. I've run into one problem: the starter I removed had a bolt that went through the circular connector at the end of the positive line that bolted the line to the starter. No such place exists on the new starter. There is a copper looking nub on the side of the starter that is flat on two sides and curved on the two ends. I tried to remove it from the starter housing thinking that is where I would bolt the hot line, but turning it did not remove it. Since there is nothing else (apparently) to attach the line to, I'm confused as to what I do to attach the hot wire to the starter. Help!!!

Hawk, If you managed to turn that piece the starter is probably bad now anyway. The fields solder to it on the inside, and they probably aren't attached now. I'd take it back and exchange it for one with the stud coming out the side.

Yes return it ,but fess up. in reply to JSTPA, 08-21-2005 13:08:19
Fess up that you tried to turn that terminal out. It may just have broken the solder connection, but may have destroyed the connector strap and insulator. Be honest so the store or next customer does not get stuck with a damaged starter. I am sure they will work with you if you admit an honest mistake.

Thanks for the great advice. Wouldn't think of turning it in without advising what I did. Don't want someone else disappointed when they haul the starter to the farm and can't get it to work!!

Your new starter has the terminal for a starter mounted mechanical starting switch. You need to install the mechanical switch on the starter which will then have the cable mounting stud bolt. If by chance your tractor has a button or key start system with a magnetic starter switch,or an inline mechanical starter switch, you will need to have the correct stud bolt installed in the starter,or exchange the starter for one with the correct terminal.
