I'm looking to buy a used skid steer, about 40-50 HP and would like input from people on which the best makes are, things to check, problems to watch for, etc.

Thanks

Jack: I bought my first skid steer new in 1972. I think most makes are quite good, certainly all the big name ones like Melroe, NH, Case, JD, etc. I'd never go lighter than the 1700 lb. lift models of any make. Skid steers are not pleasant machines to do mechanical work on, as they have most of the components of any vehicle, cramed into a small space. The small ones are worse. Also if you clean out livestock buildings with them, you just can't begin to imagine all the places you will find cow dung.

Also go and try out models with foot and hand controls, see which you are most comfortable with. Personally I like the hand controls, but don't think they are any better than foot controls. It's a personal preference item.

We have a NewHolland. Very dependable machine. We use it form scraping the barn to moving round bales. The good thing is, it's small and fits in a lot of small places. But bad thing, it is made to bouch so it won't flip as easy. I am sorry, but I cannot recall the model at the moment.

Also consider Mustang. I have had a 960 for several years, and I think it performs well. Isuzu motor with plenty of power and very clean. NO oil leaks. Rated at 1700 lb lift, and it does all of that very well. I have foot controls, and like them. I have run hand control machines, and the owners of them swear by hand controls. I think it is all what you get used to.

Two basic choices on controls- hand or foot controls. Borrow or rent each to try them out- buy one you're comfortable with. My preference is hand controls- I like my fleet flat on the floor, not running a bucket. Need them only for the remote hydraulic. I had a Case 1530- old technology, many headaches. Have a Gehl 4625SX with 3000 hours- well satisfied with it. Great backsaver. Would like a 35 series or newer to get the universal bucket mount and a bit more hyd for a snowblower. Contractor had a Case 1840 to level the basement gravel on our house project- constantly killed the engine- I thought it was under powered. Others like 1845, 1865, etc. were more impressive machines, very popular. I don't like the machines with the lift arms extending beyond the rear of the engine- too easy to damage things while lifting.

Get a Case 1840. We have one and a Gehl 4625. The Gehl is ok but not enough leg room and I don't like the controls (T-handle) as much as the Case. Also the 1840 seems to have a bit more pushing power and clearance although they are supposed to be the same.

I love our 763 bobcat, great loader. They are much heavier built than the other brands, we compared before we bought it. The hood, which gets a lot of abuse is the heaviest you will find. It is easy to service and has a very good kubota engine. Will do just about anything you want it too. If you have never driven a skid steer before, find someone with experience to help you out for the first week or so, otherwise you can easily kill yourself, the limitations of a skidsteer are much greater than a tractor, in otherwords they flip much easier.
