I just bought a Ford F-700 with a 8.2,It's on it's seventh motor in 150k. This one gets fuel in the Water and runs very off idle, then smooths out and smokes. Should I replace with a 5.9 or spend $$$$$$'s on this pig??

I would think that you could drop most any mid size engine in there, if you're creative enough. Ford used their own Brazilian 6.6's (401), and 7.8's in those trucks as well. Lots of school buses from the mid eighties had them. An IH DT466 would also be a good choice, with lots of different power specs. You might also look at a C series Cummins. A littler bigger, but more power. If you want to go with a B series, then at least get a high spec engine around 210 hp. That will at least be close to the fuel pincher. Personally, I'd scrap the truck before fixing a bloody old fuel pincher. V-8's and me don't mix. Best of luck.....

The 5.9 Cummins was an option on the F700/F7000 series for certain years, (most of the '90's, I believe), so I think that one could be dropped in relatively easily. The 8.2 Fuel Pincher ( as they called it) was not that common, and short on gonads, but it was cheap for a Diesel. If the rest of the truck is OK, I'd chuck in the Cummins.

Detroit Diesel was acquired by DaimlerChrysler in 2000, before that it was owned by GM...

its a love hate relationship you either got a good one or a bunch of problems. whatever you do dont replace it with a 3116 cat they had the same prolbems of injector cups going and fuel into antifreeze and visa versa. i dont know what gear ratio you have and waht you use the truck for but i would think a 5.9 would be a tad underpowered. l10 cummins????? ????? dont know if that would fit bolt up or not. of course it would anything at all will fit and work if you throw enough money at it but most dont have that theory or the means to impliment that theory. if i were you i would give up on that motor but dont know what you could go to. worked for a rental company long time ago had an old 7000 ford 20ft van body on it tent crew used it 5.9 cummins 5 spd manual was a gutless wonder but if geared right and not in a hurry would work.

The 8.2 is like all of the V-8 diesels that have ever been built. They are junk. Put a 5.9 in and don"t look back.

From what little I worked on the 8.2, I would have replaced it with something else when the first one bit the dust. The one I worked on was in a motor home, and the guy that owned it was never a happy camper. And he down right hated the dealer that sold it to him. and if that F700 was mine, it would not see the 8th.

There are alot of things that I do not know so I need to ask. Does a Ford truck have a GM engine from the factory?

Yes, when you get into larger trucks you can dictate your drivetrain. There are lot's of Ford's with Detroit Diesels, which are G.M. engines. You have an even better choice of drivetrain when you get up there with the big boys.

We have two F700s from the 80s that had the gm from the factory. Concidering what was avalable at that time era for that size truck, there really wasn't much else out there... those trucks aren't exactly built with enough room to drop an inline six that was avalable with the same amount of power that you could get out of those v8 (when they actually ran...)
