Some time back this subject came up and I said if John Deer had an egine that had what it took to try the transmission we might find out how much the tranny could take. Some one got real upset about that, well yesterday at the Iowa state fair I got the real story and seams as though I was right all alone. John Deer had big trouble clear back in 1966 with there engines not standing up as they should. Had r trouble with timing gears and camshaft. Could not keep the gear tight on the shaft and broke shafts as well. No names here but the gut I talked to had the Deer people in his house and just about got two fired over the deal for not taking care of the problem before they did. Just want to make sure we are straight on this John Deer ain"t always perfect as we would be lead to believe.

Blondes, Brunettes and Redheads. It's all a matter of what tickles your fancy. Take care of them and under most conditions they will work just fine.

I don't know why, but this reminds me of the early 70's when I was in the model A" Ford club. We had an older feller that was at every meeting. And after everything was hashed out, the guy would ask if he could say a few words to the members. And he did this at every meeting. You would hear people in the back of the room saying, aw SHUTT" here we go again. The old gentleman would get the floor, and ask the same question that he had asked a thousand times before. Has anyone ever put a tilt cab on a model A? Then under the same breath he would answer his own question, well I have". After hearing this over and over for what seemed like forever, some of us went over to his house to see this tilt cab model A. As it turned out, it didn't tilt that I could tell, it was the running gear with the body mounted 5-6 foot above on stilts from the scrap heap. Everything had extensions welded on, clutch, brake and gear shift. It looked like a death trap with a ladder, and the guy had only been working on this rig for 15-20 years, and he died before he ever got to road test the thing. And now, some where, the guy is still making folks say, Aw SHUTT" here we go again.

The guy just died or did somebody "get rid" of him so they wouldn't have to hear the story again?

"No names here but the gut I talked to had the Deer people in his house and just about got two fired over the deal for not taking care of the problem before they did." I think I have met that guy Several other I know have met him too. Don't know as if I would put too much stock in what some guy who has time to travel to just about every fair and local tractor pull and a lot of the local auctions has to say. I guess what I am saying is anybody can say anything doesn't allways mean it is true.

color wars again in reply to Aces, 08-18-2005 11:09:03
WE all know John Deere made a great tractor, but so did IH, massey, allis, oliver, MM, ford, farmall, case and every other one. Every tuck car tractor or even computer company has good and bad days or years. I would love to own a 4020 side counsel, but that green paint is awful exspensive. A IH 1206 turbo is probably my favorite to here and watch but they are not heavy enough for the hp. I think everyone would probably agree that every brand DID make a good tractor. I am thankful every day for my old tractors. 53 oliver88, 67 IH 656, 69 massey 1100. loved and hated each and everyone of them. so could everyone please just get along and not be so tractoracist. color is only paint deep guys.

Amen to that agree with you 110%! Lets not bash every tractor brand on earth. A joke is ok here and there, but this stuff, just not very consiterate of this board. Lets keep the humor, things like this make it hard to be humorous about different brands.

Every color and brand has had some problems along the way and still does. I wonder why we saw so many colors change a while back though? Too many whoop de doo gears and transmissions? Hmmmmm m. Some major vehicle companies had some camshaft problems too and wouldn't admit it or stand behind it until new lemon laws came out. I went thru 4 engines with that before they finally admitted it. Just corporate people usually trying to save their jobs involved.

In this whole blurb Mike M's statement is the only one that makes any since. Was there a point? Do you guys read what you type? Just wondered.

They must of got it taken care of as this is the first I have heard about a JD from the 1966 era with loose cam gears ? I'd thought if that was the case then none of the many 4020's would of made it to 10,000 hrs untouched. And sales would of dropped clear off instead of makeing record numbers.

Hmmmm Around Home.... 20 miles from MOLINE NO 4020-D made it pass 4000 hours without sleeves/pistons. Gas tractors even less. And it seemed like half of them had M&W turbo's, and they got rebuilt every 2-3 yrs, or 2000-2500 hrs. Most hours I ever heard on a 4020-D was 4700, Cousin's Father-in-law had it... broke a piston ring and started burning several quarts of oil/hour.

That's what happens when you stick M&W turbo's on stuff that wasn't factory made for turbo's. Guys get to running them too hot and burn them up.

They are all designed by people. It all comes down to hiring good people to do the design work, testing to the limits and fixing the design before the product goes out the door. The ceo has to rein in the bean counters and let the design people do a thorough job with out cutting corners.
