Wondering if our case 2470 which should be around 170hp has enough power to pull a Brillion 9 shank chisel plow? Also wondering what the horsepower recomendation is for each shank, 15hp, 20hp per shank etc... Thanks in advance.

We pulled a Brillion 9 shank disc chisel with a 2-150 White. It has plenty of power and traction, even in the hills of SE Mn. I would think your 2470 would be more than adequate.

My experience has been that at a depth of approx. 1 foot, a chisel plow requires 10 - 12 hp per tooth. In heavy ground that has not been worked for years you are looking at more like 15+ hp/tooth.

The problem that you may run into is traction. I used to run a JD 4840 and at 220+ hp it would spin out with a 10 tooth chisel. We had to run the duals to have enough traction. High horsepower and 2 wheel drive tractors don't mix well!

Hey 720

How fast were you running your chisel? There's not that much difference between my 7 shank and your 10 and my tractor is lots lower in hp than yours. My comments were for clay that I know hadn't been worked for 25 years.

txgrn,

I don't think I understand your question. I would consider the difference between a 7 shank and a 10 to be considerable. At least in the neighborhood of 50% more for the 10 vs. 7. We pulled 10 with the 4840 in 6th and sometimes 7th gear with 8 speed powershift. We always worked that tractor in higher gears with low rpm to actually force the engine to lug a little just to get some traction. It looked funny having a 10 foot chisel plow and dual wheels measuring at least 13 feet wide, but it's the only way we could get enough traction. Actually the A-C 7010 with about 110 hp handled it better than the 4840, at least traction wise. Ground speed was slower.

I have an old JD 4010 ('62 model) which is published to be about 70 drawbar hp. We are in black heavy clay and I easily pull a 7 shank "Haymie" brand chisel in 3rd of 8 gears in new soil that hasn't seen steel for a lotta years. Teeth dig down 10-12 inches. If I have been over it, I can move up to 5th gear.

Should be fine. A general recommendation might be around 15hp per shank. We pulled a 15 shank with a 125HP 4430 Deere. It really was 2 shanks large for the tractor. I've also worked a 17 shank on a 160HP 4640 Deere which was also upper limit. This is in hard Oklahoma clay. It is all variable as to ground type, tractor weight, ground moisture and running depth. 15 HP per is probably about worst case.

unless someone else proves me wrong i don't see why it wouldn't pull it. i'm not real familiar with brillion type chisels.
