What would make a good small tractor in the $3000. range. Would really like a 4X4 3 point hitch PTO compact tractor (16 to 28HP) with loader but they all seem to go for a lot more than that or someone gets to them before I do. Need a wide front end would use the tractor for our small garden, firewood, snow plowing/blowing, and loader work for leveling dirt and stones and other many projects. Where is a good place to find deals on tractors? What makes and models make a good used tractor? Had a Farmall 460 but was too big for our 5 acres, plus we have a lot of boulders and hills in the woods to get around. Thanks for any advise, Ash

I really have found 4X4 compact tractors with loaders from $1500 to $4500. They where all grey market ones and usually too far away for me to pick up and gone in no time. My cousin picked up a 4X4 Massy with loader ran good he just had to weld a part in the front drive, he picked that up for $1500. at a dealer! He traded it for a newer 4X4 Fourwheeler (worth between $3500. to $4500.). I want to thank most of you for the advice. I kind of think I would be better off looking for a small farm tractor about the size of a 8N(something I can get parts for easy, too). I mainly need it for snow removal, small garden work, and loader work, also be nice to do some brush cutting. I know a set of chains would work fine on a two wheeled drive farm tractor in the winter, driven many Farmalls and a Case in very deep snow with a load with no problem also done a lot of snow plowing with one. A smaller tractor would have be nice because I would have liked to been able to haul it down to my parents property where we have 25 acres next to there 200+ acres about 60 miles from here(we will eventially build a house there in a few years). Dad has retired and sold his IH 460. I wish we had at least kept our JD 40 crawler for some clearing and logging jobs. We do get to borrow a JD 550 dozer a couple of weekends this year, used it last year too for logging. Back to my question (sorry for rambling). What other good tractors are there about 8N size or smaller that could have a loader in my price range? The farmall cubs where nice but never seen one with a loader. Whats the weights of some of these tractors? Our neighbor had a IH404 with homemade hyd. blade for $2500. no PTO and just a draw bar, also I worked on it for him and know it will need a clutch soon. Also seen a couple of Fords not sure of the models, newer than the 8N but similar in size not sure of the prices. I will keep looking. Thanks for the advice, Ash

Your going to have to pay more than $3000 for what you want/need. Those compacts are in big demand right now.

Sounds like you would want some thing like one of the older fords. Maybe one of the 601,701,or 801s. All of them are bigger then an 8N but still small enough to get around well.

I call it the "small farm syndrome". A lot of people who move out of town are fast discovering that you can"t get much done on a 5 acre spot with a lawn mower / or yard tractor. The 600 series Fords would more than likely fit your needs. They won"t be 4x4 but you"ll pay a lot more than $3,000 for one of those compacts!!
Don"t knoiw your situation but the 4x4, while quite benefical at times, is really not needed unless you"ve got some some big pull behind equipment on your drawbar.
Just my $0.02...
