Way OT - Evinrude motor on a house boat

I've been given a derelict 25' houseboat (fiberglass tri-hull) that has an Evinrude 50 horse outboard motor.

Does anyone know where I can go (on the web or elsewhere) to find out more about the motor? I have the s/n and model number but don't know how to interpret them.

The boat is a '72 and I'm thinking the motor is probably about the same age.

This whole mess is gonna get sold as soon as I can find out enough about it to talk about it intelligently to potential buyers.

Thanks!

Stay tuned. I'll be taking pics today. I intend to put the beast on ebay and see what happens.

to the best of my knowledge:

when OMC was still alive, Johnson was white paint and Evinrude was blue, other than that they were practically the same engine

OMC fell on hard times and the remnants were bot by Bombardier, according to my boat dealer he can still get parts for my OMC engine

if it starts and runs you are doing good, if it charges the battery you are even better, about time your engine was built, the motors were built for power, mid-70's on they dialed them in for lot better fuel consumption

lets hear some other opinions

This site had the year breakdown of Johnson but didn't see EV. I don't know if these two companies are one and the same but any parts I've looked up they mention Johnson/Evinrude in the same breath. I'm guessing your model probably starts E50****, the E being evinrude, 50hp, then year codes following.

The model number doesn't have an "E" but it does start with 50. The full model number is 50173S. From reading posts on the iboat.com site I figure it's a 1971. I don't know what the 73S mean. It doesn't really matter much. Tomorrow I'll put a battery in it and see if it starts.

Thanks for the help!

Try a search on mastertech marine, all one word and add a dot com to the end of it.

Really good discussion board too for outboard ailments.
