Has anyone ever used boiled linseed oil to finish a tractor in its original condition? I would like to do a complete mechanical rebuild and clean, wirebrush and wipe down the complete tractor with linseed oil. I have tried a few parts, it really brings out the color on the original paint and protects and stops rust. It dries and gives a satin gloss type finish. If I decide to paint the tractor in the future, how much trouble to paint over the linseed oil? From what little I know, linseed oil used to be a base component of oil based paints. I think the original look would be nice, but am I missing something about using linseed oil? Looking for others' experiences. Thanks!
James

JR, BLO (boiled linseed oil)out of the can is used as a hand rubbed finish for wood, for your purpose it would be a poor choice as it will pit metal such as the hood.

Try a few different kinds of clear, high gloss paint and one may have the same effect.

Looks good now but when it drys and peels look out. Use boiled linseed oil for a faster drying time. Yes, you are correct, boiled linseed oil is the base stock in many oil based paints. Also, be aware that linseed oil gets very hot when curing, can be a fire hazard on any type of cotton or fabric wire wrappings.

So, the linseed oil will dry and then peel off? I am using boiled linseed oil. The tractor I am working on is as much rusty metal as original paint.

Without a UV stabilizer it can react in a rather nasty fashion in sunlight if applied to metal over time. Makes a funky gummy mess (dont even want to know how I found that one out). On wood, where it bonds into the grain it behaves better but just think peeling old house paint.
