Well, Locusts started singing yesterday, From what the old timers around say, should be about 45 days until the frost (if I am remembering the right number). Puts first freeze around September 19th.

Also been told if you see a lot of coyotes hunting on one day in winter, storm's coming. That one seems real accurate to me, before a snow, always see several coyotes out in the fields.

Anyway, anybody else know any of those little clues that seem to be pretty accurate?

Locusts have been singing here for the last couple weeks also. But this is Texas and there is no way we will have a frost in Sept. Maybe by Nov.

How can you guys be talking about a frost already. It is only August!!!!! !!!

Our average first frost is 11/6 but I have seen many years when we are cutting grass into December. Can not even think about planting rye grass till October 1st.

I am hoping for a real cold winter. You know..... ..... .... More than 5 nights where it gets below 32°
The kind of winter where you need to let your faucet drip all night because you were to lazy to wrap your water pipes.

Might kill off some of these mosquitoes and other bugs.

We had one last year mid-August! Killed just about everything above ground. This after one in June. Last year was a total waste of seed.

I remember 2 "winters" ago, running around (yes, outside) in a T-shirt, picking the last of my hot peppers... on Christmas Day...

And that ain't no fibbin', neither... ;-)

Here in nw Iowa the average killing frost date is 10/10. Back in the early 80's we were nipped in late August. I remember that because my beans were hailed out and re-planted in late June and they would have yeilded really well if not for the early frost. Then we have had falls where we were begging for a frost to make soybean harvest easier. I guess if I want to act like a farmer I have to moan and groan a little. Jim

Yes. I heard that coyotes howling after sunup, during the day, was a sigh of rain. For years, average frost here was 10th 15th of Sept. I have seen it in August. Now who knows. Kenny

The locusts have been singing here since early July. I am going to be optimistic and consider the locusts are really screwed up.

We always looked for "Wooly Bugs" and Hedge Apples. If there are an abundence of either/both, then it was to be a nasty winter. Didn't have EITHER around last year - mild Winter. This year the Hedge trees are LOADED and have seen a lot of woolies. Due for a cold, snowy winter. AAARGGH!

Chad, and Allan better get his alfalfa planted. I agree with the locusts singing. Dont know about coyotes. Some say cows will head out to pasture just before a storm, well mabe just a rainstorm.

I'm sure it's very localized thing, but seems to be true here.

Heck, by Halloween we almost always have had snow on the ground, not fallen, but actually on the ground. Coloken can probably attest to that. Here in about 3 weeks it will start getting downright chilly at night.

What are you combining in SW Manitoba. Too late for wheat, and too early for corn and soybeans and milo here in eastern Nebraska.

Combining that has been done in Manitoba has been winter wheat and barley. Field peas will be ready soon. Then spring wheat, canola and flax in that order.

Nat'l Weather service reports a drought in the mid-west! Heck, here in W. PA., my lawn looks like wheat straw! Only thing still green are a few weeds, and they're looking pukey! Oh, it rained for a few minutes today, just enough to spot the dust on the car! Haven't seen it like this in a long time! When i was on the well for our water, i'd water it some, but now we're on city water, and have to pay for it, it don't get watered! The authorities base the sewer charges on the water bill, too!
