Plants grow one cell (mostly) at a time. Their growth is a form of hydraulics. You know how strong hydraulics are. The area needs to be scraped down good, sprayed, rebuilt and like the others said, compacted good. Life will find a way.

I cut a tree down to asphalt a driveway within 2 weeks shoots were growing through. 2 summers of roundup every time 1 came up finally killed the durn thing. The drive was compacted and rolled and the root ground down.

Ever been to Canada? Where they have the Canadian Shield.....lotta rocks and you can see a tree growing right out of the crack in the rocks...with about a pound of dirt there. Growing things are tenacious. When North Korea had a famine, the leader advised the people to eat grass. Have we been missing something? Fred OH

I suspect BBx has it right. Plants are amazing in their tenacity and ability to grow in places they've got no business...

That said asphalt will last longer on a good base thats been properly compact with a compactor and not just a roller. Recycled pavement makes an excellent base particularly if its hit with a compactor. If you can get a sheepsfoot roller on the base and then put down recycled pavement, hit that with a compactor, then pave and hit that good (real good, not state crew "good") with a roller it'll last a long time.

I suspect the grass is growing down thru it rather than up thru it. The tiny seeds get into any crack they can find and with a little water set roots. I have occasionally seen some plants around here growing in the concrete on top of overpasses. A little dirt and sand, a crack, a little water, a seed, and a then plant.

Survival of the species. Yesterday, while driving on the interstate in Memphis, I happened to notice two similiar phenomena(sp). One was a 2 foot tall sycamore tree growing from beside one of those big concrete divider barriers where they are doing constrution. Growing out of asphalt and concrete? The other one is a vine that is growing up through a metal street light pole. The vine grows up throught the hollow pole and comes out the top. The pole has to be 30 feet tall. It does this every year.
