Here is my problem with my JD 5020. Was using it when it run out of power, and finally stopped. waited five minutes, and it started, and ran 10 min. and did the same thing. I changed the fuel filters, and the fuel pump. (I didn't know the history of the old pump, and wanted to start out with a fresh one.) It did the same thing ran 10 min, and quit. Waited 10 min, and it started. Any suggestions? Stan in calif.

Same thing happened on my 4320, an o ring wore off and would shut the fuel suppy off.... take the pump off and get it checked over, my 2 cents.

If the governor damper ring in the injection pump (soft plastic) has hardened and broken up, pieces will clog the injection pump's return fitting, causing the pump to shut down.

Remove the return fitting from the top cover of the injection pump, and check for brown or black pieces of plastic stuck inside, ahead of it's glass checkball.

Other restrictions to the return line will cause similar problems.

If this damper ring is comming apart causing the return line to be plugged, I guess this means the pump will need to be rebuilt? Is this a common problen with this pump? Thanks Stan

Bob is probably on the right track, but make sure the fuel tank outlet is unrestricted.

Hi Stan,

I agree with Rick on this one. Usually by the time that ring starts unravelin', the engine is smokin' pretty darned bad and the darned thing wont' run right.

Sounds like you have a restriction somewhere. How's about your air filter? If it is plugged up, this can shut 'em down too.

Dunno,

Allan

I don't agree with Allen on this one. You can have a perfectly running engine that will have a bad governor ring, and suddenly shut down when the return gets stoppered up with a piece of the ring.

If you clear the return fitting of the obstruction, it may run perfectly again until for many hours, until another chunk gets in the wrong place!

The problem with running the tractor too long with the damper ring failing is that once most of the ring has broken out of place, the governor parts that were cushioned by the ring begin to run metal-on-metal. Then, you have metal wear particles shed into the inner workings of the injection pump.

A simple check for this problem is to remove the complete return fitting and valve from the pump, and check for the plastic crap stuck in the unit.

I removed the fitting with the glass ball, on the pump return line. It looked like some sort of check valve. There were very small pieces of some sort of stuff about the size of pepper flakes, or fly specks. Is this what your were talking about. I was expecting to see large chunks. Thanks, Stan

There's not supposed to be anything in there except diesel fuel, so whatever you're seeing is a likely sign of trouble.
