I installed a new bendix. Put the bendix on the starter shaft and . . .. .

The first time or two both the starter and the engine turned over. Now the starter turns, but the engine does not.

Pulled it out and it looks fine, but . . . still not working when re-inserted.

Did you replace the starter ring gear on the flywheel when you did your rebuild? If not, then a tractor split may be in your future.

Pull the starter and take a close look and the condition of the ring gear.

Take starter out and try to spend motor over by prying on the ring gear. Sometime the ring gear loosen and spends on the flywheel.

You say it turned over a couple of times. It may have siezed due to too little clearances, or it may have water or possibly even gasoline in the cylinders causing it to have a hydrostatic lock. Disconnect the wire from the switch to the coil and tape it up to prevent a fire while trying the next step. Take the spark plugs out and see what happens wehen you turn it over with a hand crank if possible. if you don't have a hand crank, then try the starter with the plugs out. If it is water, you have a cooling system leaking through something like a cracked head, or a sleeve, or a head gasket not sealing. If the cylinders are not filled, then you may have an issue with a bearing or something too tight. If this is the case, you may need to consult with the engine rebuilder. Just a thought, but be sure you aren't trying to crank it in gear.

I had this motor rebuilt this past winter/
spring and have not had it running since then. Time has been limited and the temperature finally dropped so I felt motivated this weekend. With that said, I went out and thought I'd do the last of the electrical (all new harness and 12 volt) and get it going today.

I thought after my last post it was a weak starter, so I went and bought a new one with a new bendix just to be sure. Installed the new starter and it turned the engine over a little, then it stopped turning over the engine. The starter is still working, but it can't turn over the engine.

Took out the plugs and tried to turn it over w/o compression. Still starter buzzes, but it can't get the engine to turn over. This sounds like something binding within the engine, but I am looking for advice before I call up the machine shop (who also assembled it) and get them in the game.

Anything someone with tractor experience might have to add?

Great advice. I did replace the ring gear (the machinist did) when did rebuild. I'll take the starter back out and try to spin it.

I tried to push the tractor (by hand) while in 4th gear, but can't get engine to spin. I also pulled the plugs and tried to spin with starter, but no engine turning.

Have made sure it is out of gear.

Once again, thanks for the replies. I had another on a different board saying to make sure the battery is truly good. I need to try that too.
