Hi everyone - I have a dillema - I went over to see the guys that are repairing my Massey Ferguson 135 today. Last week they took off the head before me and we discovered that the pistons had rusted into the cylinder sleeves. This week I was told and saw that my clutch and short (bare) block are shot. To describe to you what the bare shore block looked like, it was rusty on the side that faces the clutch and the flywheel. Someone had welded the interior walls of the block at some point in time because it had cracked there and hadn't done a decent job, hence why I guess it broke down in August of 1993. My question for you is this: Its it still worth it fixing? I have personally $800 (New manifold, filters, etc) in parts, my mom has almost $500 too (in rebuilding the starter, generator, muffler and some odds and ends.) The thing is a '67 deluxe with the Z145 engine in it. Something I know is difficult to get parts for. It only has 179 (for real - no joke) hours on it which is why I am not as discouraged as I probably should be or am. I know I am going to be spending around 2k on this phase of it, and I am not sure how to present this to my mother, who controls the power of the purse on this one and justify fixing it other than explaining to her buy something comprable new or used and that it was my fathers.

I know I can get a used bare block for around 650 but like I said, I have to discuss this with my mom - so what do you all say? Fix it or scrap it?

Deep down I know the answer I'd give - I just don't know how realistic it is.

Christos, The tractor is apart so you can swab grease on all of the parts and let her sit another 12 years with out the elements doing more damge. Make sure you set the rest of the tractor up to protect it from the elemnts also and when you get the extra money for an importent project like restoration you will have your Dad`s tractor in the preserved state it is in right now. Or you can part it out and regret it when you are 64 like me. You can slowly start to find those hard to find parts and lay them on the shelf for when you need them too. You have time on your side.

It's a shame you can't do the work yourself, but, I would do what ever it takes to get Dad's Tractor up and running. And if Mom can't see spending the money, then you need to put it on the back burner untill you can.
If Mom want's to give up and let it go, then you need to buy the Tractor. A few hugs, and ten dollars a week will work wonders with Mom's. I also think you can come up with a block for much less than 650...And this, you can take to the Bank" If you let Dad's tractor go, you won't need transportation in later life, you'll be kicking yourself everwhere you go.

Check around and try to find a good running used engine complete and just swap it out.

From a financial standpoint, I would say no, sell it for parts [if they are hard to find, should sell well] From a sentimental standpoint, thats up to you - With 176 hours how did it get so bad?

That's my question. How about 10,176?

Well, it sat outside for the last 12 years. I don't know about the block though, I asked the mechanic if the engine had been swapped out - he said he couldn't tell. I based this on the fact that the Serial Number plate on the engine is missing and the fact that its unusual that new engines crack like that. I wish I had my camera still I would have posted pictures of it. But to answer someone else's question - it does really have 179 hours on it. I know that seems odd but it does.

You are catching on to our concerns. I can understand the rust from sitting. What I didn't understand was all the "other" work on a NEW engine that has been sitting.

I bought a tractor from an old dude once and he said that the local farm shop put in a rebuilt engine and now it doesn't run....in short they took out a diesel and installed a very worn out gasser that used to be an LP (cause you could see the LP water spiggot on the water inlet casting.

Needless to say it was well worn out. But I bought it for a song, not running, and fixed it up.

This might be a good time to get a repair book, and continue the repairs your self. Since it was your Dad's if you don,t keep the tractor, sometime down the road you will be looking for your dad's tractor. Stan

I forgot to add that the crankshaft was salvageable along with the flywheel.

Do not sell it!! One of the worst days I had as a teen was watching my family auction off the farm equipment due to my fathers health . That was twenty years ago , I still feel lucky that I had enough money to bid my "Ugly Old A " back in and keep it . It may take a while to fix what you have but there will be no regrets . george
