Hello y'all.
OK, I have a 1976 Ford 550 Backhoe. When I start it up, there is some blow by in the form of a white smoke coming out of the stink tube. It appears about 2 minutes after I have started up the motor cold. The blow by lasts about 5 minutes, then once the engine gets hot, the blow by disappears. I can use the tractor for two hours, with no blow by, but then the blow by appears again. Does this sound normal?

Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Normal no.

I would think you would also notice coolant usage? Maybe a pinhole in the head gasket leaking some coolant turning to steam. Anti-freeze in the oil?

Maybe a sticking ring(s) then when it warms the ring re-seals?

If a diesel then I wouldn't worry about white smoke upon start up but the returning white smoke after warm would concern me for the same reasons.

Is the blow-by excessive? cold? hot? when the white smoke appears? How much blow-by when the smoke clears or normal running?

Hi T_Bone!
Thanks for your reply. You are right. There is some coolant usage. I suspect I may have a leaking head gasket. The motor oil does not appear grey or discolored though. The funny thing is that sometimes, about one hour into working with the diesel, all blow by stops, and I can work for 30 minutes, to 45 minutes, and see no smoke or blow by from the stink tube. But you are right. I definitely think there is something wrong with the head gasket.
