I need to find out if their is a affordable way of Reducing the RPMs on my tractor's PTO from 1000 to 540. I tried baling hay last year and I broke the baler chain three times and had to pay someone to put baler back on sequence. Is their an external pto adapter that can be purchase to reduce RPMs on my tractor's 1000 RPM PTO or is going to the John Deere Dealer and buying a replacment 540 RPMs PTO my only option. Please help.

What model of tractor and baler? What rpms did you run the tractor at?

Which tractor is it? Model #.

Many tractors have a replaceable shaft or a shaft you can pull out, turn around, & put in the other way to change the pto rpm. That of course is by far the best way to do this.

Ruinning your tractor at 1/2 throttle will also do it, but as you found out, that is not a very good option, too much temptation to rev it up...

Some balers may have an option of turning the gar case around, or different gearsets or shafts to change from one speed to the other. but it sounds like you have a small square baler so likely not.

A person can set up a reducing tranmsfer case, but it is in the way, messes up turning angles, and costs too much.

For sure, if JD has an option for your tractor with a different shaft, do that.

Wait a minute; I don't get it.

If the baler hooks to the 1,000 PTO, isn't it meant to run at 1,000?

That is what I was thinking, is this a 540 RPM bailer that got the pto shaft changed to fit on a 100 RPM pto???. Think our tractor you just took out four bolts and the 540 pto shaft was right there, might have even just reversed the shaft stubb you took off and bolted it back in.

It wouldn't be particulairly difficult to put a 21 spline connector on the baler shaft, or even change shaft ends with another shaft which had the 21 spline end. Voila! 1000 RPM shaft. 540 baler. I hear a big bang on the horizon.
I'm not overly familiar with Deere's, but the models I've seen have a storage holder situated transversely, built into the right lower side of the rear axle center housing, and the second stub is stored there until needed. One of their better innovations. The stub is never lost. Then, just whip them out and switch when you need the other. If the old 540 stub got broken, I would think it far cheaper to buy a new stub, than risk tearing the baler to pieces. For what it's worth.....

Case did one better on the 1000 to 540 pto switch, it was one piece and you just pulled a snap ring and fliped it around, very small chance of losing one that way... of course I think IH actually had two pto's on the rear end which would be easier yet.
