What are some alternative spin on oil filters for a '73 3 cyl Diesel 4000? I have always just picked them up at New Holland, however, the dealer moved and is now out of the way. While I am at it, any alternative fuel or other filters?

Thanks,
George

I have a 5000 which I believe takes the same filter. I just bought a PH8A replacement in the Wal-Mart brand and it works fine. $2.00 or so, and in my opinion better than a Fram. I quit running Fram years ago. Wix makes a good filter if you prefer a name brand.

According to the WIX Filters Master Catalog, the WIX number is 51775.

P.S....

I double-checked the WIX catalog, the 51775 is SPECIFICALLY listed for Ford tractors, while the 51515 is listed for Ford and Chrysler cars and trucks.

Both have the exact same physical dimensions and thread size and pitch, and obviously have been subbed for each other "in the field".

There is no further information given as to why the 51775 is specifically listed for the tractor.

Hi George,

I think, but I'm not going to swear on this, but the oil filter should be a PH8A Fram, or it's equivelant. The same one used on the Ford Windsor engines. NH was actually sourcing the filters from FleetGuard, so your nearest FG dealer, or Cummins dealer should be able to supply exactly the same filter. The Wix number will also be a 51515. Baldwin can also supply them, although I'm not sure about the number. They should be able to cross it for you.
Likewise, the fuel filter is a very common filter. The same filter would have been prominent on several Massey's, possibly David Brown, or many Perkins powered engines. The filter is about as common as dirt. Found most places for less than 10 bucks. Again, FG can supply these filters, as I'm sure Baldwin can too.
I'm not sure about the power steering filter. I've always bought them from NH, and never looked for another source. Best of luck.

Rod

That fram translates to Motorcraft FL-1A which most Ford (and my Dodge 360 cu in) engines use. Very common filter. All my spin on filtered Ford tractors use it....as does the Dodge mentioned, and the Ford Hay truck.

The Fram PH8A will fit just about everything that Ford ever built, passenger cars, light and medium duty trucks, and farm tractors. There are a few exceptions, but most of those are after cars started getting smaller and trucks atarted using more diesel engines.

Thanks Rod.
Do you see any problem with running Rotella 15W40 in the 3 cyl?

Thanks,
George

Hi George,

I'll say this, and I ain't gonna run form the flak...

In my book, any Diesel rated engine oil, with an API rating of CI4, of 10W30, or 15W40 weight is what you ought to be using in that little 3 banger. Weight depending on ambient temperature. So, in my book, Rotella is fine, along with a lot more. Right now, my engine oil is supplied from NH, which is supplied by American Viscosity, a subsiduary of the Fiat group. Previously, in Canada, NH sourced their oil from Esso, and was nothing less than their best, XD3. I've also used Ultramar and Texaco products in the past in the tractors. For the pickup, I go to Walmart, and I buy the cheapest 5 quart jug of SJ rated 5W30 I see, regardless of brand. As far as I'm concerned, they come off the same tap, just in a different color jug. I do respect the viscosity ratings, fluid specs for hyd/trans oils, and in the diesels, I always use a heavy duty rated DIESEL engine oil. Otherwise, I could care less what brand name is on the jug. I'll probably be sourcing the oil from somebody else in the near future, because American Viscosity has gone completly bonkers on price. Esso used to be a competitive source. Now, I thinks I stirred up a sh!t storm.

BTW, the other Wix number quoted above could probably be taken as correct over the 51515 I quoted. I just gave a straight cross of the PH8A, which may not be a perfect filter for the tractor, although it does fit. The B2 Baldwin sounds right. Also, on the 4000, there isn't likely to be an air filter, just the oil bath on the diesels. I didn't mention the hydraulic filters, because they are only return filters, and generally only changed for a reason, or once or twice in a lifetime. Mine, at 7000 hours have never been changed, and I don't see a reason yet. My 2 cents...

If you are talking about the weight, 15-40 is right on the mark for diesels in an average climate. If you are talking about the brand, shell rotella is one of the best brands out there. I found out that I can get it for 1.56 +- at sam's club per a quart when I buy it in gallon jugs. That is cheaper than the carquest oil we use now, so I am going to start getting that when we need more. It is supposed to have very good cleaning agents in it to help remove soot and junk from the engine to the filter. Hope this helps.

# 2 diesel in summer and #1 diesel in winter would be better.

Thanks for both replies,
I was talkin oil. I run the Rotella in my pick up truck and going to start using it in my Mack and 4000. On the Gulf Coast, we do not have a choice of diesel.

Thanks,
George
