What makes tractor pop?

What makes an otherwise good-sounding (gasoline) tractor engine "pop" every few seconds while it's running? Spark plugs? Carburator adjustment?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You have either sticking valves, or burnt intake valves.

I had a similar problem with my MF135 (Z145 Continental engine). I did a complete tune-up including points, Autolite plugs, condensor, wires, cap and rotor. Rebuilt carb and adjusted it per manual after the rebuild. The tractor ran fine when under load, but popped at irregular intervals when idling. After an inspection of the plugs I found out that the carb was still set too rich. After a substantial amount of "fiddling" with the carb, I finally got the air/fuel mixture set correctly, and found out that the carb was way off, much more than I had imagined initially. It's a very touchy adjustment and even a small change makes a huge difference in the way the tractor runs.

JKC,

What kind of tractor? Those old Johns are supposed to "pop" due to their design.

If you have Champion plugs, I'd change them out for Autolite. I have had all sorts of problems with with Champions, even when brand spanking new.

Umburned fuel in the exhaust. For any one of a hundred reasons. Fuel has to be mixed to the proper ratio to burn in the cylinders. Not too rich or not to lean. Maybe only part of it burns. When it gets to the exhaust it has been heated and remixed.

Guessing here.

How about glowing carbon deposits. Suppose you have some hot carbon in the combustion chamber.....beins these guys used to run on leaded fuel and there were lots of deposits then. So if one is a glowing (which they did....do) and you come up on the compression stroke with a cylinder full of fuel air mix and it gets squeezed as you get near the top that extra heat may be enough to set her off.....right before the spark plug is supposed to do it.

Otherwise I dunno.

Good morning JKC.

Could be a lot of things, and you just named some of them. Start with a tuneup, it's the cheapest. Could be a bad set of points. Could be bad fuel, or even a loss of fuel. Change the filter. Cracked ignition wire. Charging system. Lots of things. Start with a tuneup.

Could be worse like a valve sticking, or burnt. But go the easiest cheapest route first, tuneup.

JKC..... ...exhaust pipe "pop" is usually caused by "rich-mixture" and hot carbon deposit in the pipe. Rich-mixture is usually caused by 1-sparkie not sparkeling occassionally. Reason for not sparkeling, cracked ceramic center insulator or invisable carbon fouled sparkie. I'd start with new set of sparkies, and ALWAYS check the gap outta the box per yer tractor engine specs. (most likely 0.025)

Then iff'n not "cured", check yer sparkie wires. You doubt? Start up yer tractor on DARK-NITE, and watch for blue sparkies dancing on sparkies wires. Should be soft and flexable coppercore; instead of hard and cracked. DO NOT USE modern anti-radiostatic carbon-core sparkie wires. The carbon-core is like "glass" and will crack internally and cause intermittant misses and weak sparkies..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Dell,

Never thought of the night time thing. Excellent idea for the future. Of course I can't credit you with it, but sure will use the heck out of it. Ha Ha Ha Ha. Thanks and have a great day.
