Update on hay situation

I posted a question on Monday about how to deal with a customer I sold some hay to.
I went over weds night and looked at the hay.
No real problem, the hay is dry, not molding or heating. His concern is that the hay is alittle dusty, which it is. This stuff was baled about two weeks past when it should have been, because of the monsoon season we had in early June. So, some of the grass had headed out and ripened. Thats whats giving off the dust. He had talked to several people, including his vet and they all assured him this was no problem. He even said the horses love the stuff, and he has no problem feeding it.
I told him if he was concerned I would gladly give him his money back on all of it and pick it up. The other option I gave him was to keep track of bales he felt were bad and I would reimburse him for those.
He seemed very happy, and thanked me for dealing with his issue quickly and fairly. In the end he decided to keep the hay and feed it (he had already fed about 75 bales of it).
So for now this story has a happy ending, we'll see in a month or so how many bad bales he has and go from there. Thanks for all the advice

Glad it worked out for you. Sometimes people get things in their head and they are unsubstantiated, but they get this bad feeling and won't listen to reason. Glad your customer had a good head.

I sell hay to horse folks too and haven't had any problems yet. Butttt if I did, I would check the product for quality and if ok, would be asking a lot of why not's. I know what you mean about trying to get a good product in the spring between rain showers.

Ain't it nice when it works out that way? Really gets ya puffed! Be aware, however, that there are scammers in every field and that some people will try to pull fast ones on you. Most of these stem around either trying to get you to take someone elses bad product in refund while they keep yours OR just not paying for the hay by claiming it is no good. Around here we have a lot of women raising horses and some of them are doing it on less than a shoestring. They can get pretty pi$$y over a small amount of money. I always try to do what you did and work with them one on one. Mostly I just swap the bales for them like I said before. It ain't high finance and I prefer a little peace in my life. Good luck with your hay sales and keep in touch!

Brokenwrench, We have been buying hay for the horses for over 30 yrs and dust is a fact of life with a lot of hay. Here in N. Idaho the fine powder dirt develops a lot of dust as well as the seed heads contributing their share. Our horses have developed coughs at times and all we do is wet the dusty hay down when it is fed out and that stops the problem. I would buy hay from you in a flash considering the fairness that you have shown in trying to make your customer happy.

Second the motion on dust- we usually have the dirt variety, because by the time it quits raining in the spring, grass blooming and pollen are a distant memory. I had an MC Rotary Scythe for awile- 7 foot wide machine with flail blades that cut very well, but also picked up molehills and distributed them nicely over the top of the windrow. Finally had to get rid of it, because of all the dirt in the hay. Disc mowers are much better in that regard.

Nice job of solving the hay problem, Brokenwrench- you turned a negative into a positive. I do a lot of negotiating in my job, and Rule 1 in a successful negotiation is to get everyone as happy as you can in the beginning, then work like he** to keep it that way through to the end. Once you get the hang of it, its amazing how you can defuse hostilities, but you gotta concentrate on doing so, and not take anything personal. Of course, it helps to be doing it as a third party, and not really have a dog in the fight to start with.

Yepper, communication is the key. If the customer will talk to ya about his problem, it can be solved. I stress that very much on ebay. Communication is the key. It can head off problems before they get out of hand. Good job, Harley
