I just thought I'd pass this along to those who use some of the older trucks. I happened on a 57 Chevy dump the other day. Guy was hauling slab wood. As I was looking the truck over I noticed the duals on both sides were rubbing together at the bulge at the bottom. This is a clear out of service violation. I thought he was way over loaded at first, but after talking to him I found the answer. The original tires on the Budd type rims were 8.25 or 8.50x20's. Hard to believe but the driver couldn't find any of that size laying around so he used 9.00x20's, which BTW were so cracked the cords were showing through the rubber. There just wasn't room for all that tire on those rims. Just something to keep in mind.

Just means he couldn't find any used or cheap 8.25 X 20 tires, that is a fairly common size. Hope he wasn't doing this with a split rim set up.

When and if DOT gets hold of him he will wish he spent $$$ for the right tires. You can still find those sizes new if you check with a REAL tire shop.

As it happens, I am a DOT Trooper and yes, he's a little poorer now. But, he was a nice kid that just didn't know how things are supposed to be done, so he didn't get slapped too hard. I have different feelings toward the guy that passed the truck for it's annual inspection. He and I are going to have a talk.

Hi Bret,

A lot of old farm trucks of that era used 7.50 X 20 too; even as late as the 1959s thru 1962s.

Don't know 'bout the dump trucks, tho.

Allan

So did buses. My 66 Chevy bus has 7.50 x 20's on it.

My new (to me) '69 Dodge hay truck has 7.50-16 bias ply tires on split rims. I'd sure like to get some standard rims. I found a set of rims on a Chevy in the junkyard (late '70s - early '80s) but I'm not sure they would fit. I need to do some measuring.

I have a similar problem on the 1981 Ford F350 dually. I think it was made for bias tires and when you put on radials of even the same size they touch in the middle with a light load.
