This is nice. Now you do not have to tear up the ignition column on that nice (tractor, excavator, harley, etc.) to steal it.

I guess I'm missing something here? One key starts all has been pretty common on heavy equipment for a long time. Given the value of the equipment, and the simplicity of the starting and ignition systems on most gear, just about anybody with minimal knowledge and determination could make off with the machine as quickly as if they had the key anyway.
For what it's worth, the only real value in that set of keys is that you'd save the gas money and time driving around town you'd spend collecting them. I think the average OEM value of most of those 30-40 keys would be around a dollar each, or thereabouts. This fellar just put them in a neat little package....

Hi Rod,
I have been kickin around with a tore up back and kinda bored. I usually do not talk (post) much, however with the later, I was was just searching on 6 lug rims for Kubota tractors to see what I found (per your suggestion earlier) and came across this. I did not mean to stir up a can of worms, I just found it peculiar that is all. I appreciate your opinion and think that your posts are worth while and helpful. A few fellers on here are always helpful and I include you in this group.

Hi George,

What is it about tore up backs this week anyway? I put mine out on Monday, and it's just getting better the last couple days. I guess I'm not helping it too much by keeping going either, but I've got little choice. Guess I can be a little crabby at times. This thread just surprised me a little, as I've always just taken that sort of thing as commonplace. We seldom even take keys from a tractor. Not that's it isn't a worry at times, but if somebody was going to make off with anything, the key won't stop them. On more than one occasion, I've started a Ford with a 4" galvanized spike, and vice grip, or a small flat screwdriver. Just about anything will do in a pinch.
I hope your search goes well with the wheels too. That's kind of a kick in the nether region..., having those six bolt wheels. It just makes life hard, or costly. Hope you're back in fightin' form soon. Take care.

Rod

Do you really think master keys are a new and novel idea? That thieves will now flock to purchase them and go on theft sprees?

No sir, I do not think that master keys are a new and novel idea. They are/were the same as passwords today, people forget. However, I guess that I am a little nieve in that, if I had them, I would only offer them for sale to people that could prove a legitimate use for them.

For those of us that work on equipment for a living a set of keys like this is a MUST HAVE item. Typically when I get a call that a machine is broken down the owner/operator is on another site working so I can't expect him to drop everything simply to come over and start a machine for me. Not to mention the times I've been on a muddy site after hours/on the weekend and found out I my 32,000lb service truck was stuck when I got ready to leave. It's alot easier to have a $5 key and use one of the machines on the site and pull my truck out myself than to pay $500 for a tow bill....Like one of the other posts said though for any machine made over say 20-25 years ago I don't even need a key.... Just think when you see a service truck going down the highway with all the bin door locks on them there aren't but a few companies making the locks for them also. I used to work at a body mfg and had a set of keys then to open the doors on any body they made. It wouldn't be quite as easy to get a set of keys to fit all of locks for the different lock mfgs as it is the equipment but it is possible. If all this weren't bad enough, think about all the people who put high dollar lock sets on the doors in their house...right beside a 6' solid glass picture window or something similar.... In the end all a lock does is to keep an honest man honest.

I understand the need, however, sale should be restricted unless you can prove an honest use. Also, he lists the keys for Harley davidson too.

I understand what your saying. Problem is just like the scenario I was talking about with the locks on the bodies there are only so many different companies making ignition switches and so many different key combinations within their lines. I had a key made for a piece of equipment awhile back and the guy making it said it was the same as they use on many of the Honda motorcycles..... .I'm sure if you were to try the key to your car (unles it has the computer chip)on every car like it you see eventually you'll run into one that's keyed the same. Now maybe it has a different combination of door lock and ignition key, but eventually you'd find one where one or the other of your keys would fit.

Back when I worked heavy equipment, I didn't need to get a key from the owner of the equipment. If working John Deere, my key would fit from the smallest tractor to the largest piece of equipment John Deere made. Most equipment was that way, one key fit all. I never thought there was problem with that, and still don't.. And If a thief wants something bad enough, color it gone.

My Dad the mechanic had a set a lot like those. He was real upset when he lost them in a field one time. Went back early the next day as sun was peaking out, and caught the glint off one of the cleaner ones. He NEVER would have sold them.

And what so odd about this.

I probably got 15 or so of those keys in my dresser draw.
It does say they are for HEAVY EQUIPMENT and every make only has one key for several years. In fact the new Cat key fits the machine plus all the pad locks on the side doors. One of the best pad locks made in my mind. Even has a rubber cover to keep water out.

Older large heavy equipment such as cranes do not even have a key. One toggle switch turns it on and a push button to start.

They do this because keys get loss on job sites if you leave them in the machine. Every operator has a key he keeps with him to take from one machine to the next.

in order to keep the poor thieves out.
just wire a switch to the horn in your truck and to the door lights,
when any one want to open the door the horn will bust off.. how ever if they leave the door open they be looking around to turn it off.

I have that in my truck.

Am I missing something? The text says, "Those blanks, and these, are all manufactured by the same company, ILCO." To me, I read this as they are blank, uncut keys.

My wife regularly chews me out for not locking my truck. Why bother? Just so they can bust the window out to get what they want? Been through that before; had to replace the window as well as the stuff that was ripped off.

I do not want to open up a can of worms or anything like that nor do I wish to criticize you. However have you given any thought as to whether your insurance company will cover theft if the vehicle is unlocked? Anymore companies are getting ever so picky as to what they cover.

I always found it odd, that a piece of equipment costing hundreds of thousands uses a generic key. But the cheapest automobiles have anti-theft features..... .. ?????

I was wondering the other day why they were called that. I use "bolt" cutters all the time in the ministorage business. I never saw a bolt cut with them either, just locks and maybe the occasional cable.

Stealing heavy equipment is a BIG business. Happens all the time. Some even winds up at auctions. There is no paper trail so that makes it so easy.

The key to my tractor fits the cab doors, ignition, and it is the same for every size tractor that manufacturer makes over 20 hp or so for the last 15 years.

The key just keeps kids out of the cab.
