Folks,

I usually just lurk around and read messages and this week found myself in need of advice.

I've been looking at a tandem axle trailers for a while and last weekend found an older Big Tex. The price is right for the condition - $600 cash.

Current deck is serviceable, but it needs a new one. Wiring appears to be new, dealer says electric brakes work. I still need to get them to pull it out of the weeds so I can have a closer look.

Data plate says 5000 pounds capacity which is not much for a 20 foot trailer. My current uses for it are to transport a TO-30 with an implement or 2 (bushhog, boxblade, etc.), get a load of roughcut lumber or stone, get some logs to the mill, etc. I have a 12 foot single axle that does these jobs, except for TO 30/implement transport. sometimes I have to take multiple trips which wastes gas and time.

I can see the need to transport a bobcat or a larger tractor down the road (3-5 years).

So, do I get this less capable trailer now and trade up when I get a larger piece of equipment later ?

Or do I wait until the right one comes along. ?

If that is a straight hitch BIG TEX it is classified as a "utility" trailer which is best suited for just hauling "stuff" rather than machinery. Don't get me wrong, that trailer will handle small tractors and implement OK but the day will come when you want to haul something bigger. Does it have 15" or 16" tires? I bought a six year old BIG TEX for our Church last Feb that has 16" rims and 6 ply tires for $1000.00 that was still real cherry.

Just sold a 14000# trailer for a few hundred. Had surge brakes, not legal in Wisconsin and 6" too wide for Wisconsin. Trailer was almost heavier than the skidster I was hauling. O well, got my use and money out of it for the time I owned it. Wi Craig

If she has tall grass under her she`s been sitting there awhile. I would question a 20` bed limited to 5000 lb. I would ditto T-Bone and go heavier for your future needs.

Hi wirhair,

After pulling trailers for 40yrs, I've learned thru the school of hard knocks that you will never have enough trailer unless you break down and buy/build the one trailer that you will ever need.

I did that this year as I bought a new 20kGVW 27ft + 5ft dovetail, Dexter dual tandum oil bath 10K axles, 19# I-beam with 3" channel cross beams on 16" centers, 6" torque tube, 6" edge channel with a 2-1/2" x 3/8" rub rail, 20" sping assist ramps, Bulldog GN, for $6400 out the door and $200 lower than my material cost for the same.

Shorter trailers equiped the same was about $5100 and $600 deliverly.

Now I can get rid of my 28ft flated bumper pull, won't haul enough weight, and my 18ft + 4ft dovetail flatbed tri-axle pintel, that has no load sweet spot due to being a tri-axle and again since a bumper pull, limited load weight. Don't exceed bumper pull hitch ratings as there barely adaquote as it is and I have custom built hitching.

After one pull with my new trailer, I can see I should have bought/built this trailer many years ago. Increased load stability from the DRW alxes, increased braking capibility, I-beam frame for long lasting strength on rolling loads, torque tube for front deck stability without frame twisting, easy to lift ramps.

Cut your loss now and buy the correct trailer that will last you a life time. You will save money in the long run.

I don't think it's the best buy actually. But, sometimes we wait and wait to buy the perfect thing and just never get around to doing it. So for $600 plus some likely repairs you have a decision to make. Personally, I think you would be much happier with a trailer that can handle an 8,000 to 10,000LB load. I'm thinking that while 5,000 appears to handle your immediate needs it won't be long before you try things that are too heavy for your trailer. Gee, it's nice giving advice. I'll be happy with whatever decision you make. Let us know what you do.

The first thing you want to do is go out and price a comparable new trailer, there are some real bargains to be found. The second thing I will add is that there is a very limited market for used trailers, simply because the competition between new trailer mfgrs. keeps the price for a new trailer so low. Why buy used when for just a few hundred dollars more you can have a brand new one? Another thing, if the possibility of a Bobcat or other skidsteer is in the near future, make sure the trailer you buy is capable of hauling it, not just the weight but the adaptability of the loading ramps and such. I own a real nice trailer, but the ramps will not slide in close enough to allow me to load a skidsteer.

I just bought a new 16" utility, electric brakes, with new 6 ply trailer tires, bulldog hitch for $1195 this past weekend.
The trailer appears to be well made, with 4" channel all the way to the fenders, rather than just to the front.
It"s supposed to be able to carry 6,000 lbs.
You mentioned possibly transporting a bobcat---those things weigh about 6500 lbs, so you might consider that before buying this trailer.....

Doesn't sound like a bargain to me. Big Tex isn't known for making great trailers just inexpensive ones. Look around...

A big tex 20 footer, and only 5000 lb? Doesn't sound right, are you sure it isn't 5000 each axle? One look at the axles should tell you if they are the little ones. If its 10,000, I'll take it.

You are willing to spend $600 on a trailer, going to put a $100 worth of wood on it,or more don't know if brakes are any good possibly another $100. Are the tires any good another $150-$200. Get done with a used trailer that you don't even know will be big enough for you for if your lucky $1000. What do you think you will sell it for???? Spend the little bit of extra money now and buy the one you want. You will be happier in the long run. P.S. I would go with at LEAST a 7000 lbs. and if you can have a 2 foot beaver on it. You will defiantly like that.
