Hi, I am restoring this old photo. It belonged to my great-
grandmother and was taken by a relative who was a photographer in the mid-west.

From the lady hat fashion it looks like it is from the 1890-ies or thereabouts. The photographer's name was Rasmus Liseth and I have other farm scene pictures taken by him from Red River Valley in South Dakota. Could this be from the same place? I don't know who the people in the picture are but since this was sent to my great-grandmother in Norway I assume they are Norwegian-Americans.

"C I Case Wisconsin" is written on the machine. I wonder if anyone can identify this steam thresher and therebye help date the picture.

Great ! But where's the picture of the thresher ? All I see is a steam traction engine.

Sorry the album didn't work. I will try to post it here.

I see "Case" written on the part that the ladies and the children stand on.

Your on-line album link does not work without a password, so I can't look at your other photos.

Where are you seeing the "C I Case Wisconsin" (Would be J. I. Case)lettering, on the steam engine, or is there a threshing machine in the other photos I can't open?

Below, and to the front of the operator, is a decal on a water tank that appears to be a "GAAR-SCOTT" logo. They were a big builder of steam engines, too.

I suggest trying to get your hands on a copy of the book "Floyd Clymer's Album of Historical Steam Traction Engines".

I'll try to send you a scan of a Case steamer photo and a Garr-Scott steamer photo by email.

Here is the original picture before I restored it. It took me a day or two.

I suspect you are seeing a Case water wagon behind a Garr-Scott steam traction engine.

Email me for scans of photos of both.

Assuming this thresher was new when the picture was taken, what decade would it be from?

The "tractor" is a "steam traction engine", not a "thresher".

The pictures I have offered to email to you if you provide an address (no response from you as of now), of similar machines are dated from 1886 to 1903.

A steam traction engine is a steam-powered tractor? They used it for ploughing? I inherited this picture, I don't know anything about what they do or who they are. I think it is an amazing scene.

Yes, that is a "tractor". I'm not sure what year that world came into use, in it's day it would have been called a "steam traction engine".

And, yes, they appear to be plowing with it.

Those steam engines sound like nothing else while under load!

Below are a couple of links to live steam demonstrations near me:

The top photo at the first link below is a photo of a "thresher", which could be powered by a steam engine, or a gas engine, examples of both are shown in the lower photos

Here's another show near me. They have steam plowing demos, but I don't see any plowing photos on the website.
