What a Rush!

I had my Super M up in the woods last week, and since it had been stubborn I parked it on a hill so I could clutch start it. I began to roll and moved the gearshift into 3rd I THOUGHT! When I released the clutch with 1/2 throttle I instantly discovered I had the thing in 5th gear. There is nothing like flying down through the woods in road gear. I now have a wrenched shoulder from being bounced over the steering wheel, bruised legs from the seat catching me from being thrown off, and a sore ankle from where my foot got bounced off the clutch. Been farming most of my life, but this one scared me. We've all heard the old saying "familiarity breeds contempt". I was too familiar it seems. I was thinking, I survived Vietnam, motorcycle wreck, rodeoing, and a host of dumb things, but this is gonna do it. Be careful guys!

Glad to hear you weren't serously hurt, Ray. Thanks for reminding us to be careful out there.

Just last week I was raking hay for a neighbor using an old Ford Powermaster and a 503 side delivery rake. I shut the tractor down to talk to the neighbor who was going out to bale and it wouldn't start. I was on an incline so I put t in 5th and thought that I had a little bit of throttle on. Turns out I had it at full throttle! It started up and took off like a bat out of hell and I must have looked like one of those bareback riders at the rodeo, body parallel to the ground, feet straight out, etc. Luckily I got into a position where I could throttle 'er back. I reckon it was just fatigue from rakin' in 95F temperatures. I was fine after I cleaned out my shorts!

Important thing is you survived another one. Will have to add "Won't do that one again" to the never ending list of things we shouldnt, but sometimes do. Were your eyeballs the size of platters and your heart pounding through your fingertips and toes when got done? Yep, that would be a rush. You can laugh about it now.

Since this don't fit into the catagory of Vietnam, motorcycle wreck, or rodeoing I would put it into that other catagory. Stay safe..... ..... ....

Took one of those rides on a Cat 212 motor grader once. It started I stopped flipped it in neutral, and a brake line busted.

Ray I agree that all of us should be more careful than we are. But I don't understand roll starting in 3rd. I have always used Hi gear for that proceedure. Simply clutch and apply both brakes with the right foot and remain calm. LOL... glad it all ended up OK.
Later,
John A
